Woodbine Mohawk Park: OSS Gold Series contests aplenty on Sunday

After recent cancelations due to unsafe air quality forced changes to the schedule, Woodbine Mohawk Park ended up hosting a total of five Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Series splits on Sunday.

Strobe Lite golden again in sophomore trotting colts/geldings division

Strobe Lite posted his second Gold win of the year, winning the lone C$150,000 Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) Leg 3 event for 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings on Sunday (July 19) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

The race, originally scheduled for Friday, July 17, was moved to Race 12 on Sunday after poor air quality forced the cancelation of the Friday's card.

With regular pilot James MacDonald away driving at Vernon Downs, Strobe Lite, the 2-5 favorite, was driven to the 1:52 4/5 victory by Jody Jamieson.

Toss Of The Dice (Trevor Henry) led the field to the 28 1/5 opening quarter, but second choice Touchedbyanangel (Doug McNair) was rolling to the front soon after. He led the 10-horse field to the 57 1/5 half, but Jamieson had Strobe Lite on the move seconds later. Still Touchedbyanangel was in command through the 1:24 4/5 three-quarters, but in the lane, Strobe Lite powered past to a 2 1/2 length victory. Toss Of The Dice was third, followed by First Class Mass (JR Plante) and Dream For Peace (Mark MacDonald)

Strobe Lite paid $2.90 to win.

It was back-to-back Gold wins for Strobe Lite, who won the second Gold leg in a 1:52 2/5 career-best mile on June 21 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Touchedbyanangel won the first Gold event of the year on May 24 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Strobe Lite, the 2025 OSS Super Final winner for 2-year-old trotting colts and geldings, now has earnings of C$667,328 lifetime, with C$287,407 of that coming this year. He is 6-7-4 in 19 career starts and 3-4-1 in eight 2026 outings.

The gelded son of Alarm Detector out of Shine Bright is owned and trained by Ben Baillargeon, who shares Strobe Lite's papers with the trotter's breeder, Glengate Farms of Erin, ON, plus Claude Hamel of Orford, QC and Nunzio Vena of Bolton, ON.

Sold for C$16,000 at the 2024 London Classic Yearling Sale, Strobe Lite was voted the O'Brien Award winner as Canada's 2-year-old Trotting Colt of the Year in 2025 after collecting earnings of $C379,921 and posting a record of 3-3-3 in 11 freshman starts.

Twin B Mayreau, Money Carlo repeat in Golds for 2-year-old pacing fillies

Twin B Mayreau and Money Carlo were the winners of their respective C$100,000 Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) Leg 2 divisions for 2-year-old pacing fillies on Sunday (July 19) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

It was repeat Gold victories for both Twin B Mayreau and Money Carlo, who also won their Leg 1 OSS Gold tests in the division on July 3 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

On Sunday, in the first division (race two), 1-5 favorite Twin B Mayreau (Tyler Jones) posted a wire-to-wire 1:52 1/5 victory in the field of six to remain undefeated through two career starts, both OSS Gold events.

Jones had Twin B Mayreau firing out of post six and on top early, followed by Lyons Flurry (Louis-Philippe Roy), Twin B Copacabana (Mark MacDonald) and Jersey Bulldog (Bob McClure). That remained the order through the 28 1/5 opening quarter and the 57 1/5 half before McClure made his move with Jersey Bulldog heading toward the three-quarter pole that was reached in 1:24 1/5.

Twin B Mayreau dug in and held off Jersey Bulldog by a half-length to pay $2.60 for the win. Lyons Flurry was third, followed by Twin B Copacabana and Watchmeparty (Trevor Henry) in that order.

Twin B Mayreau is a daughter of Cattlewash out of Olivia Mcskywalker bred by Jenna McNiven of Embro, ON, owned by Ecurie Csi of Sorel-Tracy, QC and trained by Francis Dumouchel.

"She's always been a nice filly, but she's never been one that really stood out," Dumouchel told WEG broadcaster John Rallis. "She never did anything wrong, but until they hit the races, you don't know how much speed they have. She’s a sweetheart in the barn, but sometimes those sweethearts in the barn, they don't have that fight in the race. But turns out she does."

Sold for C$47,000 at the 2025 London Classic Yearling Sale, Twin B Mayreau has already earned C$100,000.

In the second division (race seven), 9-5 second choice Money Carlo (McClure) dug deep in the stretch to hold off a game Waves Of Fortune (Mark MacDonald) by a half-length in a career-best 1:51 1/5 to remain undefeated through two career starts.

It was Waves Of Fortune that led the field through the opening quarter in 27 4/5 in the field of seven. McClure had Money Carlo out and rolling soon after and was on top through the 55 4/5 half and the 1:23 3/5 three-quarters. In the lane Money Carlo looked to pull away, but MacDonald mounted a serious charge with Waves Of Fortune.

"[Money Carlo] just fights really hard," McClure said. "She's got a lot of class...she just digs right to the wire. And she's very smart in the race. Once you get everything settled, she knows what her job is, and so far she's doing a great job at it."

Qued Up was third, followed by Charolais Cattle (Roy) and Rhymes With Regina (Jody Jamieson).

Money Carlo paid $5.60 to win.

Money Carlo is a daughter of Bulldog Hanover out of Shes Some Treasure owned by Brad Grant of Milton, ON, and trained by Dr. Ian Moore. The filly was bred by Steve Jones and sold for $175,000 U.S. at the 2025 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale. Money Carlo has earned C$100,000 lifetime.

"Brad Grant, a proud local owner, bought her and another filly at Lexington sale last fall," Dr. Moore said. "He called me up and said, 'I hope you have some room for them and I said, 'We sure do.' It's the first time I've had horses for Brad, and it's nice to have some success with [Money Carlo]. She has a stablemate that is training back now. We had to stop with her a little bit. She's a pretty nice filly also. So, we're looking forward to her coming on later in the summer."

Gogo Gadget, Atlas Ross both remain undefeated after Sunday's Gold event for rookie pacing colts and geldings

Gogo Gadget and Atlas Ross both remained undefeated through three career starts while winning their respective C$100,000 Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) Gold Series Leg 2 divisions for 2-year-old pacing colts and geldings on Sunday (July 19) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

The races, originally scheduled for Saturday (July 18) were moved to Sunday after poor air quality forced the cancelation of the Saturday card. The two Gold races were contested as non-betting races beginning at 5 p.m. (EDT) prior to Sunday's regular card of racing at the Milton, ON, track.

In the first division, Gogo Gadget posted his second Gold victory of his young career with a career-best 1:52 win orchestrated by driver Jonathan Drury for trainer Kyle Bossence.

Yes I Am Hanover (Doug McNair) led the field of six through fractions of 27, 55 3/5 and 1:24 1/5 before Gogo Gadget took control just before the top of the stretch and held off a late charge from the other Leg 1 Gold winner, TH Benedict (James MacDonald), to win by three-quarters of a length. Meetmeonthebeach (Louis-Philippe Roy) was third, followed by Calmbeforstorm (JR Plante) and Yes I Am Hanover.

Gogo Gadget, a son of Betting Line out of JK Getupngo, already has earnings of C$110,000 for owner Tamara Vandewiel of Arthur, ON. Gogo Gadget was bred by Jessica Kulcher of Guelph, ON.

In the second division, McNair drove Atlas Ross to a career-best 1:51 3/5 victory in the Big Jim–Kisskissbangbang colt's career Gold debut.

Atlas Ross sat fourth through much of the mile in the field of six. First Kerplunk (Roy) and then Wheels Up (Mark MacDonald) led the field through fractions of 26 4/5, 55 3/5 and 1:24. In the lane, Atlas Ross powered past to win by a half-length over Totally Tyler (Bob McClure). Stampede (Trevor Henry) was third, followed by Kerplunk and Wheels Up.

The victory came two weeks after Atlas Ross won his C$30,000 OSS Grassroots division on July 5 at Woodbine Mohawk Park for trainer Gregg McNair and owners James and Elizabeth Ross of Wingham, ON. Atlas Ross was bred by Ashley and Dean Wilson of Kerwood, ON, and sold for C$25,000 at the 2025 London Classic Yearling Sale. The colt has earned C$67,550.
