Owner Millar Farms, trainer Nick Gallucci and driver James MacDonald came out on top with filly Chantilly and gelding Allstar Maniac in the two C$150,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Mid-Season finals for 2-year-old pacers on Thursday night at Woodbine Mohawk Park. Chantilly was fourth at the 26 4/5 quarter after tucking in from post eight but moved to the outside in the backstretch and worked her way by Wickedpace (Jody Jamieson) beyond a 55 4/5 half. Chantilly and MacDonald would go on to reach three-quarters in 1:23 1/5, and then she powered away from the rest of the field in the lane, using a 28 1/5 final kicker to score by 3 3/4 lengths in 1:51 2/5. Wickedpace was second and Macapelo Seelster (Tyler Borth) came in third at 155-1. "She's special. She gives me a lot of Prohibition Legal vibes the way she felt at 2. She's just a powerhouse," said MacDonald. "I was saying to Jody pulling up she got away on me a little bit in the third quarter because she feels like she's just floating, like she's just cruising along. I just kind of wrapped her up down the lane. She's just waiting for you to call on her at all times. "So far she hasn't shown any flaws. The only thing, her first two races she was a little warm, and then today, Nick's done a great job, she was like a kitten to drive. I could've anything I wanted. I didn't know what she'd do when she got to the lead - she's never really cut one other than her qualifier last time - she was just full aces there. She was two fingers. In the last turn I spoke to her, and just boom she was gone again." A Millar Farms homebred, Chantilly is by Big Jim. She's three-for-three in the win column, has banked C$132,500 and paid $2.10 to win. ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter In the event for the colts and geldings, Fifth And Five (Jamieson) hit the opening quarter in 27 3/5, briefly let a two-wide Stonebridge Wizard (Doug McNair) go by and then re-moved to the point prior to the 56 4/5 half. From there, Fifth And Five strolled to three-quarters in 1:26 and began to sprint for home as MacDonald swung Allstar Maniac out three-wide from second-over. Fifth And Five had the jump in the stretch and looked like he would get the job done, but Allstar Maniac just kept coming on the outside, and his 26 2/5 final kicker propelled him to the victory by half a length. Sterling Choice (Bob McClure) collected third. "Halfway down the lane it didn't look like we were (going to win)," remarked Gallucci. "James just said as soon as push came to shove he really put it in another gear and fought to win the race, which is what really wanted to see. "This horse, he's so fast. It's coming down to where he's got to be rateable, and he looked very ratebable today. I've trained some nice horses, and I'd put him in that category. For an eighth of a mile I've never sat behind a horse that can move like this horse. Moving forward, hopefully we can start driving him more like a normal horse, and we'll see how things shake out here on the Grand Circuit." Allstar Maniac is a son of All Bets Off, was bred by Allstar Farms and was purchased for C$70,000 at last year's London Classic Yearling Sale. He has won twice from five outings, has pocketed C$96,348 and returned $20.80 to win.
