Lindy The Great, sent off at 7-1, posted the biggest victory of his career thus far by taking Saturday night's C$546,000 Maple Leaf Trot for free-for-allers at Woodbine Mohawk Park in 1:51 3/5. With James MacDonald in the bike and starting from post six, Lindy The Great showed some early speed and pocketed up behind Beads (David Miller). That two-hole then became a three-hole as Forbidden Trade (Bob McClure) pushed on two-wide to take command just after the 27 second opening quarter. Behind Lindy The Great was Atlanta (Yannick Gingras), a two-wide Back Of The Neck (Ake Svanstedt), and favored Manchego (Dexter Dunn). Forbidden Trade remained on the engine to a 55 2/5 half, and Atlanta would then move out first-over. She was making gains on the rim on the far turn, but then was able to drop into the pocket before the 1:23 2/5 three-quarters as Beads made a break and was taken off the track. Lindy The Great remained in third at that point, while Manchego, backed up behind a struggling Back Of The Neck, rolled into a break of her own after three-quarters, taking her out of contention entirely. While all that was going on behind him, Forbidden Trade had smooth sailing and opened up what appeared like it might be an insurmountable advantage in the lane. Lindy The Great had other ideas, though, as MacDonald tipped him off the pylons in upper stretch, and he was able to chase down Forbidden Trade late in the mile to prevail by a length and a quarter, punctuated by a MacDonald fist-pump. Perfetto (Dag Henriksen), who drew in off the also-eligible list when Play Trix On Me scratched earlier in the week, turned that opportunity into a third-place finish at 141-1, and Hypnotic AM (Doug McNair) came in fourth from post ten at 101-1. Atlanta faded through the lane and had to settle for fifth. ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter "I thought I had a good shot. I needed a perfect trip, and I needed everything to go right, but he's just such a good horse. He's just missed so many times this year," said MacDonald. "It's just special, and I'm just so happy I can't even speak. "He felt like he was just going to erupt when I moved him. I had gotten a pretty clean trip, and when David ran, I got out pretty clean on Atlanta's back. I was loaded with trot, and no one was coming on the outside. I got to take my time, and I knew Bob had a good lead, but I was so full. Halfway down the lane, I said 'well, maybe he isn't getting there,' and then he dug in and found some more, and that's what champions do. He's just a terrific animal."
