Woodbine Mohawk Park: Filion first in both Somebeachsomewhere divisions

Century Farroh made it four-for-four in 2019, capturing the first of two C$80,000 divisions of the Somebeachsomewhere for 3-year-old male pacers Saturday night at Woodbine Mohawk Park. With Sylvain Filion in the bike, the son of Mach Three scored in 1:52 4/5 over a dull track.

Century Farroh and Better Up exchanged the early lead, with Filion regaining well past the 28 2/5 opening quarter. With little competition, the 1-10 favorite hit the brakes through the middle-half, coasting through fractions of 56 4/5 and 1:25 4/5 without a challenge.

In the homestretch Filion had to aggresssively get after Century Farroh as Caviart Rockland and driver Scott Zeron spent the entire stretch eating up the long lead of the favorite. However, Century Farroh was able to hold off his rival at the wire, with early leader Better Up settling for third.

"He didn't seem quite as sharp," said winning trainer Dr. Ian Moore following the race. "The track is chewed up on the inside."

Ratchford Stable NS owns Century Farroh, who will go next in the North America Cup elims on June 8.

Filion came back at the other end of the spectrum, scoring at 19-1 with Tyga Hanover in the second Somebeachsomewhere division.

This time it was a son of Somebeachsomewhere trained by Benoit Baillargeon as Tyga Hanover pressed the pace early, clearing at the quarter in 27 1/5 before yielding to Best In Show. Tyga Hanover held the pocket nicely as Best In Show stepped out to fractions of 56 3/5 and 1:24 2/5 as Stag Party applied serious pressure on the outside through the third quarter.

Filion, concerned about getting racing room, came out behind Stag Party off the final turn, and Tyga Hanover responded to roll past the pace-setters and score in 1:52 1/5. Best In Show held for second, with Stag Party third and Bronx Seelster fourth after a luckless journey.

Tyga Hanover returned $41.70 in winning for the third time in four starts this year and punching his ticket for the North America Cup. Thomas Rankin, Elizabeth Rankin, and Glen Rankin own Tyga Hanover.

"If he raced well we're going to put him in the North America Cup," said Baillargeon. "I guess he's going into the Cup."

Three-year-old pacing fillies also raced on the program in a trio of C$73,000+ Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Series divisions. They would be won by the still-undefeated Sunny Dee (now eight-for-eight) in 1:52 3/5 for driver Trevor Henry and trainer Bob McIntosh, Betcha Baby in 1:54 1/5 for Filion and trainer Nick Gallucci, and Boadicea in 1:51 3/5 for driver Jonathan Drury and trainer Bill Budd.
