Woodbine Mohawk Park: Clash of unbeaten fillies goes to Niki Hill in She's A Great Lady

The battle of unbeaten fillies took place in the homestretch of Saturday night's C$500,500 She's A Great Lady Stakes final at Woodbine Mohawk Park, and Niki Hill emerged victorious once again, scoring in 1:50 2/5 with Dexter Dunn in the bike.

Longshot Treacherous Kiss and driver Doug McNair blasted out of post 10 to control the pace before the opening turn, then yielded as Joyride Hanover marched on for Tim Tetrick to control the action prior to the 26 4/5 opening quarter. Todd McCarthy was alert to get off the pylons into the turn in order to get in front of Niki Hill with Boudoir Hanover. McCarthy sent his filly sharply to the front past the quarter, then stretched out the 1-10 favorite to the 54 4/5 half before releasing her.

James MacDonald had second choice Prohibition Legal on the offensive at that point and went on the attack to challenge Niki Hill through the final bend. The two were on virtually equal-footing passing three-quarters in 1:22 3/5 and separated themselves from the field entering the stretch drive.

Dunn sat pretty chilly, absorbing the pressure, and then managed to coax the right response from the Always B Miki-sired filly. Niki Hill was drawing clear from her rival late in the going with a 27 4/5 final quarter to complete the mile. Prohibition Legal lost for the first time in her seven-race career but was clear for second, with Joyride Hanover coming through along the pylons in deep stretch to edge Boudoir Hanover for the show spot. Balance would earn the fifth-place check.

"I thought she had more in the tank," said Dunn following the race about the stretch drive. "She's got a lot of power and the staying ability."

Trained by Chris Ryder and owned by Tom Hill, Niki Hill returned $2.30 to win.

Owner Tom Hill has come up with two outstanding fillies this year after Party Girl Hill's injury forced her to the sidelines. Asked for a nickname for Niki Hill, he called the unbeaten filly, "A Ferrari with hair."
