Captains Quarters had just one win in an overnight race coming into Saturday night's C$970,000 Metro Pace final for 2-year-old colts and geldings at Woodbine Mohawk Park, but he showed a powerful 25 2/5 closing quarter in his elimination, and that was a sign of things to come as he was victorious in 1:49 3/5 when the big money was on the line. Driven by Jody Jamieson, Captains Quarters found a seat in fourth from post seven and then pulled to the outside after Clever Cody (Sylvain Filion) hit the opening quarter in 27 1/5. Captains Quarters, who had been raced exclusively from off-the-pace before tonight, rushed to clear Clever Cody prior to the 55 1/5 half, with even-money favorite Legendary Hanover (James MacDonald) going first-up from fifth past that marker. Legendary Hanover chipped away on the rim on the final bend and was second turning for home, but Captains Quarters dug in the length of the stretch while asked by Jamieson and also kept a live Clever Cody hopelessly pinned in the pocket. Legendary Hanover did come with one final push inside the final eighth, but it wasn't enough, as Captains Quarters held sway by half a length. The no-luck Clever Cody came in third, followed by Captain Luke (Yannick Gingras) and Storm Shadow (David Miller). "Everybody saw him last week, I was in an impossible spot. It wasn't a great drive and he got to shake loose - 25 2/5 (last quarter) - horses just don't do that every day," Jamieson said after the victory. "I knew we had the best horse coming in. I just didn't know how the trip was going to work out and I definitely didn't see myself re-moving to the lead, but he did what he's supposed to do. He goes when you ask him. He's an amazing horse. "He's a great horse and you guys are going to hear from him. Hopefully I can keep the drive on him for a while, but even if I don't, he's going to be a great horse in his career. He was the 5-2 third choice and paid $7.30 to win. "It's pretty awesome. The horse didn't have a lot of company training down before I got him and Jody's pretty obliging. I asked him to come in and we train them in sets all the time," Holland said about getting Captains Quarters ready to race. "When it came time to race him, we knew he was a nice colt and the only option was Jody at the time. "I'll sleep better tonight than if he didn't hit the board."
