Trainer Luc Blais finds himself in a familiar position heading into this weekend's Grand Circuit action at Woodbine Mohawk Park. One of the sport's leading conditioners of trotters, Blais sends out a pair in Friday's C$140,000 Casual Breeze for sophomore filly trotters. On Saturday, he will have three freshmen with eyes on the top prize in the rich Peaceful Way and William Wellwood Memorial stakes finals. The Blais-trained Drawn Impression and Emoji Hanover bookend the field of 10 in Friday's Casual Breeze carded as race six. Drawn Impression is making her first competitive start since a break in stride cost her in the Hambletonian Oaks at the Meadowlands on August 3. "I'm not really sure what happened," said Blais of the miscue. "James (MacDonald) said she got out of there fine but just made a bad step." Prior to the Oaks final, Drawn Impression had been a solid second in her elimination. A $308K winner as a freshman, Drawn Impression is winless in four tries this year, but Blais is still optimistic that the Determination-homebred can get on the winning track. "We trained them on Monday and they both were super," said Blais. "I gave them some time in the field after the Meadowlands." Drawn Impression (post one) gets her best draw of the season. Emoji Hanover, on the other hand, landed post 10 in the field, but Blais likes what he has seen from the Greenshoe-sired filly that lost a photo in a 1:51 mile on Hambletonian Day. "She trotted strong all the way down the stretch and just got beat," said Blais of the effort. "The post is tough but it's not where you start but where you finish." Blais will be looking for his second straight Peaceful Way win, having captured the 2023 edition with Drawn Impression. On Saturday night he'll send out Lasting Dream, a homebred daughter of Cantab Hall that has shown plenty of talent in just a handful of starts this season, in the C$390,000 final listed as race seven on the 13-race card. "She's a very nice filly," said Blais of the daughter of Dream Together, a Muscle Hill-sired mare that he trained during her brilliant racing career. "In the elimination Chris (Christoforou, subbing for regular pilot Louis-Philippe Roy) just took it easy with her and she finished strongly." Lasting Dream was more than 12 lengths in arrears at the half and closed stoutly into a big final-half to reach the final. Prior to her fourth-place finish in the Peaceful Way trial, Lasting Dream had shown high speed, capturing the C$80,000 Pure Ivory final in 1:54 on August 8 with a 27 second final quarter. "There's a lot of nice fillies in this race," said Blais. Last week's two eliminations saw a pair of upsets, and that makes the final a wide-open affair. R Dutchess (post twp) surprised heavy favorite Champagne Problems with a strong surge late in the mile for driver Jody Jamieson in a personal-best 1:53 1/5 clocking. Royal Mission stayed close to the pace and provided the upset over Lasting Dream in the other division timed in 1:54 3/5. Royal Mission (post three) has won two of her first five starts for trainer Marcus Melander. Champagne Problems came up a neck short in her Ontario debut in the Peaceful Way trial but finds a solid spot (post one) for the final for trainer Nancy Takter and driver Dexter Dunn. The Tactical Landing-sired filly has already won in 1:52 3/5 this year while taking the New Jersey Sire Stakes final at the Meadowlands on Hambletonian Day. ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter Blais sends out Emoticon Legacy and Lookatmegoamigo in the C$575,000 William Wellwood Memorial, race 10 on Saturday's stakes-filled program. "I think he can be a very special horse," said Blais when referring to Emoticon Legacy, the second foal from his top mare Emoticon Hanover. "He had missed a month, and I wasn't sure how he would be [in his elimination]." The result was a thrilling stretch drive with Emoticon Legacy taking down heavily favored Nordic Catcher S on the wire in a 1:56 clocking with James MacDonald subbing for Louis Roy. The Walner-sired half-brother to Drawn Impression, Emoticon Legacy reminds Blais more of his dam. "Drawn Impression is more of a laid-back filly," said Blais. "Emoticon Legacy is more like his mother, a little aggressive at times." Emoticon Legacy landed post two for the final, in search of his third straight win without defeat. Blais's other colt Lookatmegoamigo wasn't as fortunate in the draw, landing post 10. "He got pushed for the first time last week," said Blais. "Sometimes they come back from those races and are a little bit better." Lookatmegoamigo was third-placed-second in his elimination while trotting the fastest mile of his young career. The Wellwood appears to be a competitive contest, with elimination winner Tactical Dynasty (post four) the probable favorite off an impressive 1:53 4/5 front-end score for trainer Ron Burke. A son of Tactical Landing, Tactical Dynasty will be driven again by Yannick Gingras. Trainer Ake Svanstedt qualified three for the final, with Nordic Catcher S, a son of Six Pack, the richest colt in the field with $199K earned during his brief career. Nordic Catcher S drew post six in the field, with Svanstedt trainees Warrior (post seven) and Getastarfromthesky (post eiht) directly to his outside. Matt Bax has a solid pair for the Wellwood in Extended Session (post one) and Southwind Caspian (post five). Extended Session has made breaks in his last two following three straight wins to begin his racing career. While there will be plenty of interest on the trotting side this weekend, Blais will also send out the rookie pacing filly Charlotte Station (post five) in Saturday's C$110,000 Eternal Camnation (race three). She'll be facing a tall order against the unbeaten Chantilly (post eight), a multiple Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Series winner with a 1:50 4/5 mark. Racing gets underway at 7:10 P.M. (EDT) on Saturday at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
