Woodbine Mohawk Park: Analysis for Thursday 8/31

Garnet Barnsdale|Aug 29, 2023
Mohawk Logo 1.5

Top Pick Stats: 387 - 1176 / $1,985.40 (-$366.60)

Best Bets: 62 – 110 / $219.40 (-$0.60)

Spot Plays: 20 - 110 / $120.60 (-$99.40)

Best Bet: WINMEBAK (6TH)

Spot Play: DONNA HANOVER (4TH)

Early Pick 5: 1,6,7,8/6,7,8/5,9/5,9/1,6 = $19.20

Late Pick 5: 4,8/1,4,7/3,7/4,6/1,6,10 = $14.40

Early Pick 4: 5,9/1,6/4,8/1,4,7 = $4.80

Late Pick 4: 3,7/4,6/1,6,10/3,4,7,9 = $9.60

Race 1: 2YO colts and geldings NW1 or $5,000 LT **Gtd. $100,000 Pick 5**

(1) E L TITANIC got a clean line and closed well now he gets a driver switch to hot pilot Roy. I'll give him a slight nod to kick off the early Pick 5. (7) HILARIOUS ARCHIE showed speed both early and late last time when he dropped to face straight maidens. He should be a big threat right back. (6) BEAR NECESSITIES took the trotting hopples off and stayed flat which is a positive sign. He is another possibility here. (8) WIDESPREAD PANIC improved in his second start and Macdonald sticks with him. He is another in with a shot in a wide-open race.

Race 2: ONTARIO SIRES STAKES: GRASSROOTS LEG 4: 3YO COLTS & GELDINGS PACE

(7) LEAVE IT TO LEO was conservatively driven from the 10-hole in a non-points race last week now he draws better in this Grassroots dash. It should be all systems go here. (8) REIGN SUPREME took a couple of weeks off then tightened up with a qualifier against top aged pacer Beach Glass. He should be right there vs. these. (6) HES SURE GOOD woke up in a big way for a hot barn and they way Doc Moore’s stock has been racing it might be foolish to dismiss this colt. (2) COOP A LOOP should be good for another slice in this spot.

Race 3: 2YO colts and geldings NW1 or $5,000 LT

(5) TIMEISONMYSIDE is reportedly prepping for an upcoming Grand Circuit start so he should be looking for a good result here facing maidens; call to repeat. (9) AT EASE HANOVER drops out of a Grand Circuit race for a hot barn and he will likely be the one to catch here. (6) ICACO HANOVER, a $40,000 Harrisburg yearling, is related to eight winners and he looks ready to roll at first asking. He can land in the exotics here. (3) DO MISCHIEF can close late for a share here.

Race 4: 2YO fillies NW1 or $5,000 LT - Pick 4

(9) DONNA HANOVER, a $40,000 Harrisburg buy, is related to two horses that raced and they have combined for 44 wins in 139 starts. I'll take a price stab with this filly in a race with no standout. (5) PRINCESS ARIEL showed little in some fast races in New Jersey but she fits much better here and she has a good chance. (10) MUSCONE comes off a nice effort but post 10 for a two-year-old maiden trotter is virtually mission impossible; small share predicted. (2) ONE NIGHT IN PARIS should be good for another slice in this field.

Race 5: F&M claiming $15,000 for NW $25,000 LT

(1) HURRIKANE MSRODINE raced great in defeat in the Pop Up series final and she is the one to beat in this spot. (6) SUNSET SOPH gets Macdonald back and post improvement and she is the obvious threat in a spot where she will get more aggressive. (7) JS BETTHISLADY comes off a nice first up win but this is a tougher spot; using underneath. (4) BEST SHOW can pass a few of these in the final 1/4 and land on the fringes.

Race 6: ONTARIO SIRES STAKES: GRASSROOTS LEG 4: 3YO COLTS & GELDINGS PACE - Pick 5

(4) WINMEBAK had a perfect tightener vs. older rivals last week and he is strictly the one to catch and beat. (8) SAUBLE ACE was first up in that same race and was only a neck behind the choice at the wire. He figures to be the main threat. (3) THE MOMENT AROSE should be passing some of these late to land in the exotics again. (5) AHI SUNSHINE has the speed to contend for a share. He should be part of the Tri or Super.

Race 7: 5YO and younger NW1 or $7,000 LT

(4) ANCIENT WALL is faster than these and he looks ready to break his maiden in this 2023 debut; top call. (1) ANGELIKI, who comes off a decent effort vs. NW2 at Georgian Downs and notched three wins last year, is the other one that I'll use on multi-race tickets. (7) C S GOLDPOLICY is fast enough to contend if he stays flat but he needs a clean line tonight; using underneath. (8) STONEBRIDGE COMEDY jogged vs. easier at Grand River but that was a good effort and he is worth a look for the exotics at a price tonight.

Race 8: ONTARIO SIRES STAKES: GRASSROOTS LEG 4: 3YO COLTS & GELDINGS PACE - Pick 4

(7) SANTANA HANOVER got a useful tightener in here last week after jogging in a Grassroots race in Ottawa two starts back. Aggression is expected now. (3) SOUNDS GOOD is much better than he showed last week in a race that also was likely just a tightener for this points race. Sharp improvement is expected tonight. (6) TIGANELLO is sharp as seen by the 54-flat opening 1/2 that he cut last week but these are tougher; small share predicted. (8) GANDOLF THE BLACK was J Mac's choice but I prefer to use him underneath starting from the widest post.

Race 9: 3YO fillies Grassroots starters in 2023

(6) SHINY NEW PENNY was no match for the winner last time, but that rival draws post 10 now in a non-points race so this filly could get a great trip racing on the lead tonight; top call. (4) LASTKICKATHECAN passed them all last week, trotting a 56-flat back 1/2 to get the job done. She is sharp and dangerous. (10) PRETTY SPECIAL looked great beating the choice last week but intent is questionable now that she draws widest in what likely is a prep for the next points race. I'll use her underneath expecting a late rally. (9) LUCY WHO finished with trot last week and she can be part of the exotics here.

Race 10: Claiming $15,000 for NW $35,750 LT

(6) SHARKY makes his second start off the Barrington claim and he gets McNair so aggression is likely here. I'll give him a slight nod over (1) MACHIN A TRICK, who has the best form but tends to get too far back and into traffic issues. (10) BEEF N CHEDDAR will blast and lead for as long as he can. He is capable if he gets loose; using. (5) WOODMERE BANKROLL should pass a few of these late and land in the exotics.

Race 11: Claiming $15,000 for NW $22,000 LT

(7) HASHTAG WATCH ME, claimed by Waxman and with Roy in the bike tonight will be on full go here and he could lead every step. (4) NO TIME AT ALL comes off a good effort and moves from a 7% barn to a 17% barn now. He's in with a shot here. (9) CEREAL KILLER was out all the way last week and still finished in the Tri. He is another possibility here in a race with no standout. (3) DICE R OUT made a nice wide move in his first start racing off the Yates claim. He should be rolling again late and he is another that is capable with the right trip. (6) LIL RED SPORTSSTAR is 0 for 25 but his recent form is decent enough that he should be in the exotics.
