Woodbine Mohawk Park: Analysis for Thursday 5/5

Garnet Barnsdale|May 03, 2022
Mohawk Logo 1.5

Meet Stats: 207 - 662 / $1158.70 (-$165.30)

Best Bets: 37 - 62 / $121.20 (-$2.80)

Spot Plays: 21 - 62 / $131.10 (+$7.10)

Best Bet: BIG BETTOR HANOVER (2ND)

Spot Play: R ROYAL PORT (1ST)

Early Pick 5: 2,8/1/2,6,8/2,6,7/2,3,5 = $10.80

Late Pick 5: 5,6/9,10/4,6,7/6,7,8/3,6 = $14.40

Early Pick 4: 2,6,7/2,3,5/5,6/9,10 = $36

Late Pick 4: 9,10/4,6,7/6,7,8/3,6 = $36

Race 1: 4YO and Younger NW1 or $7,000 LT **Guaranteed $100,000 Pick 5**

I like the way (2) R ROYAL PORT qualified for this sophomore debut and he switches to a barn that is starting to heat up a bit after a slow start to 2022; top call. (8) LENIS will take action here because he trotted a 56 2/5 back 1/2 when facing better in the Spring series. He is an obvious threat. (7) INN AT RODANTHE, a $65,000 yearling, is a full-brother to $1.3 million earner Met's Hall. He is worth a look for the exotics on debut. (1) COME HOME FOR LIFE has a good late kick and he can close for another share here.

Race 2: F&M 4YO and Younger NW2 or $21,000 LT

(1) BIG BETTOR HANOVER got hammered down to 2 to 5 in her sophomore debut and she didn't disappoint, firing home in 26 2/5 to win. She should take another here. (3) GOUDAWON flashed home in 54 flat when third behind two good fillies last week and she should be an Exacta factor here. (2) IVORY HANOVER showed a hint of talent in her rookie year and she is worth a look for the exotics going for a new barn here in her sophomore debut. (7) BABY BONITA tried the front end and it didn't work out. She likely sits and rallies here.

Race 3: F&M 4YO and Younger NW1 or $7,000 LT

(6) STORMONT MABEL raced well when 2nd to a big favorite and she looks best here; top call. (8) CLEVELAND MONEYKA and (2) LMC BUTTERSCOTCH are interesting to me because of the barn changes and I'll use both in the early Pick 5. (7) JARA has improved in each qualifier and she goes for a barn that is good with young trotters but typically patient. I see her rallying late for a share on debut.

Race 4: 4YO and Younger NW1 or $7,000 LT - Pick 4

(7) LYONS PRIDE's sophomore debut was good, but trying to close from 5th into a 27 3/5 kicker was mission impossible. I can see Henry being more aggressive tonight and he gets the nod. (2) MR BEAST was first up in the same race and he finished just ahead of the choice. He took lots of action in that race and he should be a big threat here. (6) SUNDANCE LOU made two moves in a fast race and he should contend for at least a share vs. these. (3) LYONS LOU's sub-28 kickers in his qualifiers indicate that he is ready for a good 2022 debut and I'll use him underneath here.

Race 5: 5YO and Younger NW2 (F&M3) or $20,000 (F&M $30,000)

(5) MR FRITTER had a useful opener when chasing a fast winner and he could go right down the road in this spot. (2) WILLTOWIN HANOVER got stuck behind a slow pace last week and got what he could. He will offer a good price here in a spot where he has a decent chance; using. (3) MISCHEVIOUS ROSE finished off her rookie season nicely and she looks ready to roll here, but she has much bigger fish to fry this summer and she doesn’t have to win this NW2. I am inclined to try to beat her. (8) P C FREE WHEELING is worth a look for the bottom of the exotics at a big price tonight.

Race 6: F&M 4YO and Younger NW1 or $7,000 LT - Pick 5

(6) FREE AS CAN BE brought $80,000 at the Lexington sale, she is by the top sire, and she looks ready to roll; top call on debut. (5) VELVET STINGER adds Lasix for her sophomore debut and she goes for a barn that sends their young stock to the track ready. She is the other one that I'll use on multi-race tickets. (4) CHERYLS SHADOW raced against the best last year and took some checks in those races. She should be an exotics factor at a minimum. (3) TROPHY BRIDE exits a race where the leader totally gapped the field out on the backstretch on a night that most races were wind-affected. She can improve here and she’s worth a look for exotic bets.

Race 7: 5YO and Younger NW2 (F&M3) or $20,000 (F&M $30,000) - Pick 4

(10) DRINKS AT HOME won an elimination of the Wellwood last year and he looks ready to roll for his sophomore season. The risk, of course, is playing a colt with higher ambitions from the 10-hole in this sophomore debut. Let price be your guide here. (9) KEVIN ANTHONY was a lot faster last week and he looked good blitzing maidens. His improvement makes him a threat here. (7) TIE ONE ON adds Lasix after disappointing as the 7 to 5 chalk in her season debut. She can improve but she might be fighting for scraps if the top two choices both fire. (3) LILYS LASS finished fast in her qualifier and she can come on late to take a share here.

Race 8: CLM HDCP $8,000 to $10,000

(7) THUNDERING JIM drops to a likely spot and he should have a big shot here racing on the engine or in the pocket; top call. (6) LYONS IMAGE is an obvious threat going for Moreau off the claim in a spot where his good gate speed should play well; using. (4) LUCKS ALL CREDIT comes off a big mile where he was out the route and he picks up the leading driver; upset chance. Veteran (2) COOL ROCK will likely need one. Keep an eye on him for next week.

Race 9: F&M CLM HDCP $8,000 to $10,000

(8) DIXIE STAR N made two moves and jogged in her lone start for Moreau now she goes for Nixon off the claim. I'll stick with her in a spot where she should be able to double up. (6) HANNAH ON THE VIRG took a new life's mark when she jogged at this level four starts back so it's very possible she can wake up on the class drop; using. (7) SOMETHING ROYAL almost beat better three starts back and she will likely improve on the class drop here. She is another possibility for late multi-race tickets. (3) COCO BEACH DE VIE, 2nd to the choice last week, figures to take another share here.

Race 10: 4YO and Younger NW2 or $15,000

(6) THE BOSS SAID took a fast mark here as a rookie and he looks ready to rock in this sophomore debut; top call. (3) E L GLADIATOR comes off a strong effort in defeat and he is the main one to fear; using. (5) LUX SEELSTER has improving form and he should be in the exotics mix off another following trip tonight. (2) HES A LADIES MAN should pass a few of these and land in the Tri or Super. (7) AINT HE SPECIAL seems that he could be faster this year but he likely sits and rallies for a share here.
