Woodbine Mohawk Park: Analysis for Thursday 3/20

John Rallis|Mar 18, 2025
Mohawk Logo 1.5

Top Pick Stats: 62/210 = -$69.40

Best Bets: 6/21 = –$16.70

Spot Plays: 3/21 = -$16.90

Best Bet: HEAD HONCHO (RACE 10)

Spot Play: STARS TREASURE (RACE 5)

Early Pick 5: 6,7,9 / 1,5 / 5,6,8 / 6,7 / 5 = $7.20

Late Pick 5: 2,3,5 / 5,8 / 4,5,6 / 5,6 / 6 = $7.20

Race 1: 5 YEAR OLDS & YOUNGER, NW 1 (WINNERS FOR A PURSE OF $9,000 OR LESS 2 RACES) RACE OR $8,500 LIFETIME.

(9) ALL VALLEY made a miscue when trying to push forward off the gate in his first start of 2025, but recovered to be 3rd off a first-over effort. This 3YO gelded son of Walner had a nice qualifier in preparation for his sophomore debut, and I’m willing to give him the nod despite the outside draw. (6) TEN got picked off right on the line despite a favorable trip. He draws well, will likely be summoned off the gate and will probably be the one to beat in this contest. (7) ENIGMA BOVINO rallied very nicely to be 2nd to a dominant winner. She can build off that effort and is a serious player with the right trip. (3) SOUTHWIND CAPONE has hit the board in 4 of his 5 starts and will have every opportunity to grab a share again.

Race 2: CLAIMING $20,000 FOR NW $50,000 (OS $70,500) LIFETIME.

(1) D A MAGIC MIKE wasn’t much of a factor in his latest after failing to hit the board. He was a winner at this level two starts back and will now race for the barn of Shayne Barrington, and merits respect in this contest this evening. (5) ON TIME DELIVERY has won back-to-back starts at this level in similar fashion. He draws well and should be the one that everyone else will be chasing this evening; contender. (3) JIMMY WHISPER is coming off consecutive runner-up finishes to the one above. He draws inside and should work out another favorable trip, but he’ll need to find more. (6) JUST ASK JOE finished 3rd in his most recent. He will draw well and has speed to chase in this contest; can grab a share.

Race 3: 5 YEAR OLDS & YOUNGER, NW 1 (WINNERS FOR A PURSE OF $9,000 OR LESS 2 RACES) RACE OR $8,500 LIFETIME.

(5) QUILL never had much of a chance in his latest after drawing the outside and getting away last. He wasn’t able to improve a position but draws much better tonight. I’ll give him a whirl in start #2 hoping for an aggressive steer and a trip to the winner’s circle. (6) UNCLE DOUGLAS failed to hit the board as the chalk in his latest. He draws well again here and could be summoned off the wings of the gate, making him a threat. (8) FISHERMANS BLUES is coming off a 3rd place try in start #3 of his career. It was an improved effort but he draws outside. He’ll need a trip. (1) WHOOPS had a chance to hang onto the place spot before jumping it off close to the wire. He will have every opportunity to land on the ticket, so long as he trots.

Race 4: FILLIES & MARES, 5 YEAR OLDS & YOUNGER, NW 1 RACE (WINNERS FOR A PURSE OF $9,000 OR LESS 2 RACES) OR $8,500 LIFETIME.

(7) DG HOLI SHAMOLIE was stuck behind stalled cover but rallied nicely in the lane to just miss. She’s been 2nd in two of her last three tries and has been nearing closer to her 2nd victory of 2025. She picks up the services of James MacDonald this evening and we’re hoping for a good trip. (6) GOONED AGAIN was conservatively handled in her first start of 2025 after a strong qualifying effort in preparation for it. She draws well and will likely be primed for a strong effort this evening; contender. (3) WICKED CRAVING will make her 2025 debut off a dominant qualifying score. She draws well and can grab a piece. (2) MAFALDA paced evenly up the inside in her latest, her first start of 2025. She can take a step forward but we’ll slot her in for just a piece.

Race 5: CLAIMING $20,000 FOR NW $38,950 LIFETIME.

(5) STARS TREASURE was looking to leave aggressively but instead floated out to get away 6th. He stayed in along the rail and had some good pace late in the mile to finish a sneaky 6th. He draws the best he has in weeks and is one I’m comfortably willing to back in this spot; top call. (7) LANSESIDE SPORTSTAR left out for early positioning in his latest and hung around to be 3rd. He raced better in comparison to some of his prior efforts and can take another step forward in this spot. (3) THE BURKETONRANGER tipped three-wide off some bad cover and rallied nicely to be 3rd. He is stepping up in this spot but is coming off a pair of improving efforts as he gears up for this contest; he can hit the ticket. (9) SMILES FOR MILES worked out a poor trip in his latest but rallied nicely to be 2nd. He draws pp9 in this spot and might have a tough time getting involved early on because of it.

Race 6: 5 YEAR OLDS & YOUNGER, NW 1 (WINNERS FOR A PURSE OF $9,000 OR LESS 2 RACES) RACE OR $8,500 LIFETIME.

(3) RAMIRO is coming off back-to-back comfortable scores at Flamboro to kick off his sophomore campaign. He was well within himself in both of those victories and comes into this contest brimming with confidence. He should be aggressively handled and will be the one to try and chase down. (5) FILM AT ELEVEN comes off a pair of solid 7th place qualifying efforts. This filly has had difficulty staying trotting throughout her young career but will add hopples here. She picks up the services of James MacDonald this evening, which always provides some level of intrigue. (2) LONG LEGS made a miscue in her 2025 debut but recovered to be 6th. She came off a sneaky qualifying effort in preparation for that start and could be tough to fend off if she is within striking distance turning for home. (4) MODELO GOLD finished 3rd in his latest and will have every opportunity to hit the ticket this evening.

Race 7: FILLIES & MARES, CLAIMING HANDICAP $8,000 TO $11,000.

(5) TAMARA HANOVER drops out of a Pop Up event and into this $8,000 claiming handicap. She draws well and is coming off an effort where she finished off her mile sharply; I’ll give her the nod here. (8) DEL DIGGITY is coming off a troubled trip where she was only able to angle out late in the mile to secure 3rd. She has been sharp and will have every opportunity for a bounce-back effort here. (2) CENTURY KISS ME rallied nicely late in the mile to grab a share. She has raced better than a couple of her lines may indicate and will have every chance at hitting the ticket. (3) JAZZVILLE found a seam late in the mile and blew up the tote board at 63/1. She can grab a share here.

Race 8: FILLIES & MARES NW 2 RACES OR $30,000 (OS $39,500) LIFETIME.

(6) ROSETTA didn’t have much to offer despite a very good trip. She angled out of the pocket and finished 4th despite coming off consecutive wins in her efforts prior. She draws well and gets the nod from James MacDonald over another rival who is a contender, and I’ll side with his decision and hoping this filly can bounce back. (4) OH HILL NO was leaving aggressively off the gate and made a miscue. She was no worse than 2nd in her three starts prior and should be in the thick of things early so long as she trots. (5) KADIDDLE is coming off a very game effort where she was first-over a long way to score career victory number one. She draws well again and looks more than willing to compete against this group despite moving up in nw2; using. (8) HOPE N GLORY rounded out the superfecta in his recent try and will have every chance to land on the ticket.

Race 9: CLAIMING $8,000 FOR NW $6,000 LAST 5 STARTS. ALLOWANCES FOR AGE.

(6) PASSIONATE PRINCE came first-up against the chalk and was still gaining despite finishing 3rd. He is winless in seven tries this year but hooks a softer group overall this evening and could be primed for a winning effort; top call. (5) TUF COOPER didn’t have much pop when getting clearance in the lane in his latest. He’s better than what he’s shown as of late and could work out a different trip this evening; using. (8) WINWITHAWHISPER rallied late to be 3rd. He draws outside and will have every chance to hit the ticket. (9) MUSIC TO MY GEARS has hit the board in two of his last four starts and should have an opportunity to do exactly that here.

Race 10: CLAIMING HANDICAP $8,000 TO $11,000. ALLOWANCES FOR AGE.

(6) HEAD HONCHO won comfortably in his first start for his new trainer Joey Squires after converting off a pocket trip. He draws well again and will have every opportunity to work out a similar trip; repeat candidate. (7) BRING YOUR FIRE was 3rd to the choice last time out. He will now race for new trainer Raphael Bourassa, but will have to work harder off the gate to secure early positioning; contender. (4) THATSWHATISAID N is coming off a win in his most recent and is one that will have every shot turning for home with the right trip. (5) BIG BULLY returns back here to Mohawk off a 2nd place try at London and should be able to stick around for a piece. (10) RAYS KREDIT finished 3rd in his latest for new trainer Michelle Leblanc and can round out the Hi-5 despite drawing post 10.
