Woodbine Mohawk Park: Analysis for Thursday 2/6

John Rallis|Feb 04, 2025
Mohawk Logo 1.5

Top Pick Stats: 5-32 / (TBD)

Best Bets: 2-3 / (+$1.20)

Spot Plays: 1-3 / (+$14)

Best Bet: SOUTHWIND CAPONE (RACE 6)

Spot Play: BRING YOUR FIRE (RACE 10)

Early Pick 5: 6,9/1,4,6,7/1,9/4,6,8/9 = $9.60

Late Pick 5: 4/4,6,7,9/1,2,4,9/2,7/5 = $6.40

Pick 6: 4,6,8/9/4/4,6,7,9/1,2,4,9/2,8 = $16

Race 1: FILLIES & MARES, 5 YEAR OLDS & YOUNGER, NW 1 RACE (WINNERS FOR A PURSE OF $9,000 OR LESS 2 RACES) OR $8,500 LIFETIME.

(9) PASS CODE is coming off her first lifetime victory at Flamboro in an effort where she was confidently handled. She has looked sharp since entering the barn of Mary Ratchford and she looks capable of doubling up despite pp9. (6) BETTERNREDDER was aggressively handled and took a bit of a shuffle before angling out to finish a good 3rd. She is inching closer to a victory and can be right there. (5) MACH IT MINE is coming from London off three-straight victories but will stretch out on the big track here. She might be better suited with a target to chase in this spot with a longer stretch. (2) CALCITE will make her career debut here as a 4YO. She comes into this contest with just a lone qualifier but didn’t have much to offer in that prep. She’s one I'll monitor for next time.

Race 2: FILLIES & MARES, CLAIMING $20,000 FOR NW $40,000 (OS $68,950) LIFETIME.

(7) P L RINCHENIA was trapped 5th along the inside and found a seam late in the mile; she was coming on to her rivals to finish a strong 3rd and should have every chance to work out a winning-trip here. (1) CHEERS TO THAT was 3rd-over behind non-advancing cover and decided to dive back to the inside as a rival in front of her began to stop. She fits this group nicely and can be a threat with a cleaner trip. (4) MY LAST KISS converted off a perfect trip when she got away in the pocket to skim up the cones. She’s better suited when she has a target to chase and can work out a similar trip. (6) FANCY LETTERING got leg-weary late in the mile and lost to the one above; she’ll take support and is among the main contenders.

Race 3: 5 YEAR OLDS & YOUNGER, NW 1 (WINNERS FOR A PURSE OF $9,000 OR LESS 2 RACES) RACE OR $8,500 LIFETIME.

(9) MR JAZZ MAN is coming off a strong effort where he trotted well late to get up for 2nd. He draws pp9 for the second consecutive week but has been racing much sharper than his rivals. He will just need to overcome the outside this evening. (1) MR BALLYKEEL is one that we gave the nod to last week but he made yet another miscue. Tonight he will add trotting hopples for the first time in his young career and that could prove helpful to keeping him at task – which would make him a threat. (2) HOBNOB HANOVER has been 2nd in two of his last three and should have every chance to hit the ticket. (5) CHECK MASTER showed some good trot in his qualifier leading up to his debut, but has since then made breaks in his last two starts. He should be able to hit the ticket if he mind his manners.

Race 4: CLAIMING $8,000 FOR NW $5,000 LAST 5 STARTS.

(8) GIDDY UP MAX never had a chance in his latest but did show some good wheels at the end of his mile; he’ll need a set up and he could get one in a race that could see a few leavers. (4) HAPUNA BEACH went on a speed mission in his latest and tired. That effort could do him well going into tonight and he might be able to work out a different trip. (6) SAVOIR DUHARAS worked out a winning trip at a big number last week and he drew well enough to work out a similar setup. (9) HEAD HONCHO continues to drop down the class ladder despite not being at his very best and is worth consideration on the drop alone.

Race 5: CLAIMING $20,000 FOR NW $25,000 (OS $31,800) LIFETIME

(9) ARAGONITE is coming off an uncharacteristic, 10th place effort on 1/23. He was entered to qualify on 1/31 in what was a winning effort vs. much tongue company than he keeps in here and should be in a good spot to get back into the winner’s circle. (6) JOHNSTOWN JET was a solid 3rd in what was his first start in a few weeks going in. He draws well for this contest yet again and should be among the main contenders. (7) LANESIDE SPORTSTAR drops in a claimer this evening and is better than what he’s shown as of late; he can hit the ticket. (5) ADMIRAL DEO comes into this racing adding Lasix and is one worth monitoring here because of it.

Race 6: 5 YEAR OLDS & YOUNGER, NW 1 (WINNERS FOR A PURSE OF $9,000 OR LESS 2 RACES) RACE OR $8,500 LIFETIME.

(4) SOUTHWIND CAPONE took a shuffle as they were turning for home and showed good trot late in the mile to be 3rd. He draws a good spot on the gate here and should have every opportunity to break his maiden. (6) LUVUTOTHEMOONANBAK never left the rail as he skimmed up the inside to grab a score in his qua prep. He draws well, retains Doug McNair, and should be a threat at first asking. (10) INDUSTRIALISTS has been 2nd in both career tries but will have to start from pp10 this evening, making a victory in this spot increasingly difficult; can get a piece. (7) FORBIDDEN ONE was able to angle out late in the mile thanks to a breaker to his outside and showed some good trot late. He will have every chance to hit the ticket.

Race 7: FILLIES & MARES, CLAIMING HANDICAP $8,000 TO $11,000.

(6) WIFEY SAID SO has won back-to-back at this level and draws well for this contest yet again; she’s tough to look past in this spot. (4) TAMARA HANOVER was second to the choice and she’ll have every opportunity to work out a good trip. (7) FIRE SHINE moved up to this claiming handicap for a new barn and was an okay third; she can improve. (9) LADYSMITH rallied nicely to be 3rd in her latest and is a strong candidate to hit the ticket.

Race 8: CLAIMING $20,000 FOR NW $50,000 (OS $62,500) LIFETIME

(1) D A MAGIC MIKE worked out a nice trip in his latest but was picked off by a rival who had momentum to his outside. He retains the services of Louis-Philippe Roy, who had his choice of another in this contest; top call (9) ALWAYS B MELMAN was claimed out of his most recent try and will race out of the barn of Corey Giles. He draws outside and will be a contender with a trip. (4) DM SNAKEPLISSKEN was able to fend off a rival who appeared to be going by in a very tight victory. He’s capable of a good effort when at his best and could be trending in the right direction. (2) JUST ASK JOE was claimed after a dominant score at London and will race out of the Cassidy Schneider barn. He picks up JMac at the controls, but I’d love to see one here first.

Race 9 CLAIMING $8,000 FOR NW $5,000 LAST 5 STARTS.

(7) BETTORHOLDONTIGHT was moving well late in the mile but had too much work to do. He will be heard from late and should avoid less trouble in an eight-horse field. (2) KEYSTONE TENACIOUS has disappointed as the choice in three straight tries. He put in a couple of steps before the line and should be the one to beat here. (4) KEEPAMERICAGREAT will return to the big track after a try at Flamboro where he drew the second-tier. He draws well here and will have every opportunity to secure a good piece. (5) CEREAL KILLER comes off a lackluster try but draws the center of the gate and could stick around for a good piece here.

Race 10: CLAIMING HANDICAP $8,000 TO $11,000.

(5) BRING YOUR FIRE exits a few tries at Flamboro and will return to the big track where he was 3rd at this level on 1/9. He draws well coming in, faces a group who hasn’t been ultra-consistent, and could work out a winning trip in this spot. (9) THATSWHATISAID N has been no worse than 4th over his last 6 tries, including a pair of wins during that span. He does his best work late and will need to work out a trip from here. (10) KJ OWEN has been the most live horse late in his miles over his last two tries. He doesn’t have much early speed off the car and will have to overcome a tough trip, in all likelihood. (7) MACH JACOBS didn’t have much to offer as the choice in his latest but is better than what he showed; he can hit the ticket. (6) PASSIONATE PRINCE hooks tougher but has been 2nd in his last three tries; should be able to stick around for a share.
