Woodbine Mohawk Park: Analysis for Sunday 5/17

Kevin Plowcha|May 15, 2026
Mohawk Logo 1.5

Top Pick Stats: 244/790 (-$340.80)

Best Bets: 29/72 (-$26.80); Spot Plays: 18/74 (-$44.90)

Best Bet: P L OZZY (Race 10)

Spot Play: GREENARROW HANOVER (Race 7)

Early Pick-5: 5,8/3,7/2,9/8/3,4 $3.20

Late Pick-5: 3,4,9/9/1,4/3,6/4 $2.40

Race 1: CLAIMING HANDICAP $12,000 TO $16,000. ALLOWANCES FOR AGE & SEX. ENTER IN MULTIPLES OF $1,000.

(5) ULYSSES had to methodically move to the outside after being stuck behind horses. He could find a similar path tonight and potentially trip out if room materializes. (8) BAYFIELD BEACH couldn’t clear when making a first over move, but stayed on well to be third. A forward trip seems likely. (6) BETTOR B GOING has flashier gate speed and a good post, but if he gets moved on at the opening quarter and has to make a second move, I don’t know that he can sustain it.

Race 2: CLAIMING HANDICAP $18,000 TO $24,000. ALLOWANCES FOR AGE & SEX. ENTER IN MULTIPLES OF $1,000.

(3) PHONE NINE ONE ONE got to the lead from the high draw last week and kept going for a repeat win. Another forward trip should give him every chance. (7) WANNABEABIGSTAR moves to a claimer and should get away much closer to the leaders. His kick should have him in the mix. (1) CANT STOP LOU finds a middle ground where he is likely to improve from last week’s effort. I’ll use him underneath tonight.

Race 3: NW $3,100 LAST 4 STARTS OR NW $7,500 LAST 8 STARTS. AE: OPT. CLM. $20,000. AE: N/A $1,405 P/S IN 2026.

(9) BELLA CAVALLA tends to excel at this level, and that was seen just two starts ago. Look for her to use gate speed off the car and potentially wire the field. (2) JOKIC finds an easier group tonight and should provide value all around if he can find his way onto the ticket. (8) MISTER MAGIC held on for the win last week after setting an extremely quick opening half. He is usually always expected to fire out.

Race 4: HORSES & GELDINGS CLAIMING $8,000. ALLOWANCES FOR AGE.

(8) GLORYVIEW IMAGE is hard to knock after a sharp drop and pop win. He shouldn’t face too much pressure off the car unless something abnormal happens. (7) TROUBLEWITHTHECURV could stretch out the ML favorite if Gagnon is hell bent on being the leader. Last week’s aggression saw him score at a huge number. (1) THE COLT has been out of position lately, but should add value to exotics if he can work out a better trip.

Race 5: CLAIMING HANDICAP $30,000 TO $40,000. ALLOWANCES FOR AGE & SEX. ENTER IN MULTIPLES OF $1,000.

(3) PONDER NO LONGER gets another try from me after last week’s third place finish. To put it simply, nobody was catching Code Cracker last week. His price should be inflated given the presence of that rival again. (4) CODE CRACKER had plenty of backers last week and was strong after getting to the lead. Didn’t attend the wedding, so I won’t attend the funeral. (9) SOMETIME SOMEWHERE races off the claim after trying to close from an impossible spot. He showed gate speed two back, so a leave attempt isn’t impossible.

Race 6: NW $3,100 LAST 4 STARTS OR NW $7,500 LAST 8 STARTS. AE: OPT. CLM. $20,000. AE: N/A $1,405 P/S IN 2026.

(3) P L SAPPHIRE is clearly improving with each start this season and held her own against some salty customers last week. An inside draw should give her plenty of trip options. (9) SHADRACK HANOVER should provide value this week assuming he steps forward. He will need to get away a bit closer than he did last week. (4) JAYPORT CASH feels like the “sneaky” horse that everyone will end up using, but he has been unable to string quality starts together as of late.

Race 7: 5 YEAR OLDS & YOUNGER, NW 3 (FM 4) RACES OR $50,000 (OS $64,000) LIFETIME. AE: NW $1,000 L4.

(9) GREENARROW HANOVER wound up as my Best Bet last Friday at The Meadows, and was a very good second given the early move and given that the winner got the jump on him. I’ll try him right back in his Mohawk return. (4) FLORIDA GUY was a less sneaky use last week, but he took a fair amount of support and was finally given a chance near the lead. He took full advantage there and should be tough again tonight. (6) MAXIMUM EXPOSURE flaunted enough speed to make him appear like a consistent factor at this level. He draws a coveted Mohawk post tonight.

Race 8: NW $2,500 LAST 4 STARTS OR NW $5,000 LAST 8 STARTS. (W/O $11,250 LAST 8 STARTS N/E). AE: N/A $1,150 P/S IN 2025-2026.

(1) WHY WOULDNT YA really should just pace these off their feet considering who he has been butting heads with. I think early aggression is the key. (4) HES TOURING got a quality tightener under his belt to kick off his season. He should be passing horses in the stretch once again. (8) SOUTHWIND SAMBUCCA may have no choice but to blast again. That could secure him a good trip, but he stands 0-for on the season.

Race 9: NW $6,250 LAST 4 STARTS OR NW $12,000 LAST 8 STARTS. AE: OPT. CLM. $30,000. AE: N/A $2,680 P/S IN 2025-26.

(6) PESO HANOVER is likely a reach again this week, but he showed enough late interest to make me think he has a real chance to blow up the board with the right trip. (3) MANOAH took a step forward last week and now gets major class relief. He is one of a few class droppers that looms large on paper. (1) MYFRIENDJOSE was gapped for a majority of the final half. He couldn’t quite sprint with those types, but now gets a drop in class which should allow him to be in the mix.

Race 10: NW $6,000 LAST 4 STARTS OR NW $12,000 LAST 8 STARTS.

(4) P L OZZY was a sharp winner in his return and is likely to try similar tactics tonight. I’ll look for a similar result. (5) BOLD SPIRIT could get another aggressive steer in hopes that he wakes up. At the very least, he should secure a good spot off the car. (3) BLUE BAR has been just okay in recent weeks. I can see him taking some air on the outside and getting a piece.
