Woodbine Mohawk Park: Analysis for Saturday 7/22

Garnet Barnsdale|Jul 20, 2023
Mohawk Logo 1.5

Top Pick Stats: 316 - 972 / $1,643.50 (-$300.50)

Best Bets: 51 - 90/ $187.60 (+7.60)

Spot Plays: 17 - 90/ $99.10 (-$80.90)

Best Bet: STOCKADE SEELSTER (2ND)

Spot Play: DRAGON ENERGY (6TH)

Early Pick 5: 4,6/3/5,6,7,8/1,2,6,7/1,8,9 = $19.20

Late Pick 5: 6,7/1,3,4/1,5,6/7,9/5,6,7,9 = $28.80

Early Pick 4: 1,2,6,7/1,8,9/7/1,3,4 = $7.20

Late Pick 4: 1,3,4/1,5,6/7,9/5,6,7,.9 = $14.40

Race 1: Winners of 4 but no more than 6 or $80,000 LT AE: 4YO and 5YO to be claimed for $60,000 **Gtd. $100,000 Pick 5**

(4) FROZEN HANOVER moves to the middle of the gate here after cutting the mile and prevailing late and he gets the call to repeat. (6) JABBERWOCKY is in easier here and he should get more aggressive tonight. He would be no surprise in this spot. (7) RON looked a sure winner last time but when they hit the wire, the choice's nose was ahead. He is hard to trust on top at this point. (3) SOUTHSIDE EDDY had dead aim on the leader in the Popup final but he couldn't gain. This spot is tougher and I'll use him on the bottom.

Race 2: ONTARIO SIRES STAKES GOLD LEG 2: 3YO PACING COLTS and GELDINGS

(3) STOCKADE SEELSTER got doubled up in the pocket and broke, costing himself a spot in the Meadowlands Pace final. He is the clear one to beat in this sires stake. (1) FADE TO LIGHT is improving and I'll use him to try to create some Exacta value here. (6) MIDNIGHT NATION won a Gold then had a useful tightener. He's in the exotics mix tonight. (4) WRITE ME A ROSE adds Lasix here and he should be in the Tri or Super, likely rallying off a helmet late.

Race 3: 5YO and Younger NW2 or $30,000 LT

(8) SAUBLE ACE maintained his strong form racing great in defeat on 7/8 and he is the one to beat here despite drawing widest. (5) RED COIN raced much better in his last two starts and he should be heard from late in this mile; using. (6) CANCUN KAI is quirky but fast and he requalified nicely for this. He is another that's in with a shot in this competitive field. McNair chose (7) WRY over others and that makes him worth a look for the exotics.

Race 4: NW $9,400 L5 or $20,550 L10 AE: OPT CLM $45,000 AE: Pop Up Starters - Pick 4

(6) HIGHLANDBEACHLOVER steps up tonight, but he was terrific taking a new life's mark in his last start and he gets the call to repeat. (1) MASONS DELIGHT N was set for his North American debut last week, but the race got washed out by rain. His sizzling qualifying mile on 7/4 makes him a contender. (7) ARTIES IDEAL should appreciate this class drop and he is capable vs. these; using. (2) SHADOW IN RED is sharp but has had some tough trips. He could upset if things fall his way in terms of pace and trip.

Race 5: NW $16,250 L5 or NW9 LT AE: NW $23,500 L5 to draw outside

(8) THE GREEK FREAK was first up against Lawless Shadow and that wasn't the winning trip that night. Drawing outside he should find some cover this time. I’ll stick with him. (1) EMMETTS BUDDY came back sharp and he should be another that will be passing rivals in the lane; using. (9) CODENAME GIGAR BOX comes off a sharp effort vs. tougher and he is another in with a shot in a good betting race. (4) AMERICAN HISTORY couldn't fend off the pocket sitter last week, but he remains a threat at this level.

Race 6: 5YO and younger winners of 2 but not more than 4 or $46,500 LT AE; 4YO and 5YO to be claimed for $50,000 - Pick 5

(7) DRAGON ENERGY, lined up widest in this short field, will be the last one to make front and look to go right down the road; top call. (6) IKES DREAM adds Lasix coming off a sharp Grassroots win in Clinton and I could see him riding a nice trip in the choice's pocket here; using. (3) BETTERHAVEMYMONEY makes his second start back and Macdonald sticks with him over the choice. He can improve enough to take a slice. (5) ACAPULCO SUNBURN should be good for another share in this spot.

Race 7: 3YO and Colts and Geldings Grassroots starters who are NW $29,550 in 2023 - Pick 4

(1) AHI SUNSHINE crushed Grassroots rivals on 6/6 here then went off form but following a qualifier on 7/4 he raced much better at Clinton. He can beat these if he produces something close to his best effort. (3) WINMEBAK is an obvious threat here adding Lasix coming off two good closing efforts but I wonder if he will get overbet. The light bulb went off for (4) WATCHMAKER when he dropped to face easier and he must be considered coming off that big winning mile. (8) ALL ATTITUDE was produced at the very last moment when full of pace and he got up to break his maiden. I see him closing for a small share facing tougher tonight.

Race 8: ONTARIO SIRES STAKES GOLD LEG 2: 3YO PACING COLTS and GELDINGS

(6) WHATCHULOOKIN AT paced a 52 2/5 back 1/2 in the last Gold now he gets McNair. Expecting aggression, I'll give him a slight nod over (1) NO CONTROL. The latter finished ahead of the choice but he had a better trip. Regardless, he is an obvious threat. (5) MOMENT IS HERE just missed last time he raced in a Gold two starts back and you know the pedal will be to the metal going for $100K tonight. Any of the top three choices can win here. (2) BETTER B BOLD blew up at the start of his Gold debut and lost all hope. He can contend for a share if he behaves.

(9) LINEDRIVE HANOVER is getting better every start and while he likely won't get a pocket trip this time, he may not need it; call to repeat. (7) LAWLESS SHADOW is on a roll, and his only shot here will probably be an all-out speed try, so Moore will likely try to seat his main rivals early. His best puts him right there with these and he could go a long way on the engine. (8) WARRAWEE VITAL can never be discounted but you have to wonder how many of these big miles he can step off in a row. I'll play to beat him this time. (4) COLD CREEK QUESO faced some tough ones in New Jersey. He should be in the mix for a share here.

Race 10: NW $9,400 L5 or $20,550 L10 AE: OPT CLM $45,000 AE: Pop Up Starters

Good betting race to finish the card with the likelihood of a wild early pace setting the race up for a closer. That closer will probably be (7) BEYOND BETTER if he stays flat, but he has obvious risk showing breaks in two of his last three starts. (9) PIPEWRENCH CHARLIE was good at this level when set back for a pylon violation and he should offer a good price here starting from a wide post; using. (6) ROCKME ROLLME excels on the class drop and he is hard to leave out, but he is no lock here. (5) FABRIZIO N came close to his life's mark on the drop and pop and he gets McNair back for the step up in class tonight. He isn't out of this. (2) ROCKIN N TALKIN dominated the recently concluded Pop Up series but these are tougher. I'll use him underneath.
