Woodbine Mohawk Park: Analysis for Saturday 5/11

Garnet Barnsdale|May 09, 2024
Mohawk Logo 1.5

Top Pick Stats: 229 - 706 / $1133.60 (-$278.40)

Best Bets: 38 - 66 / $123.20 (-$8.80)

Spot Plays: 9 - 64 / $46.60 (-$81.40)

Best Bet: FUNTIME BAYAMA (7TH)

Spot Play: ROCKABILLY REBEL N (10TH)

Early Pick 5: 1,5/2,8,9/5/4/4,5,6,9 = $4.80

Late Pick 5: 4,7,9/3/1,2,3,4/2,6/1,2,6 = $14.40

Early Pick 4: 4/4,5,6,9/4,7,9/3 = $2.40

Late Pick 4: 2,6/1,2,6/3,10/2,7,9 = $7.20

Race 1: 5YO and younger NW2 or $30,000 LT AE: 4YO NW $1,525 L3 **Gtd. $100,000 Pick 5**

(1) WARRAWEEFORLAURA was driven more aggressively as expected in the Spring Series final and he got the job done. This is tougher, but he is a colt that I think still has upside and he may offer another good price tonight. He gets the call to kick off a nice card of racing. (5) NIJINSKY will rightfully take a lot of action based on his 1:51 mile when he finished close to his more heralded stablemate. He looks ready to fire and he would be no surprise here. (3) LOUS WORLD was ready to go racing off the shelf and he destroyed a field of maidens in his sophomore debut. He is another with upside, but a small share is likely for him here. (7) CHALK HANOVER can close for another share here.

Race 2: NW $25,000 L5 or $36,000 L8

New face (2) LARRY KARR has a good chance to get a great stalking trip with the fastest leavers lined up outside and I’ll take a price stab with him in his local debut. (8) JABBERWOCKY gets needed class relief tonight but his preferred racing style conflicts with a few others. If he can clear to the front early, he has a good shot, but on paper it looks like a few of them want the lead. (9) COMMAND drops after trying the front twice. Does he sit and rally this time? I think so. He is on my early Pick 5 ticket. (5) RESPECT OUR FLAG can pick up some pieces late and land in the bottom of the exotics.

Race 3: Winners of 4 but not more than 7 or $80,000 LT

One of the North America Cup favorites (5) LEGENDARY HANOVER kicks off his sophomore campaign here in what looks like a soft spot for him. It’s hard to imagine him getting beat. (3) SAULSBROOK IAN was really good last week and if the choice falters or is raced ultra conservatively, he is the most likely to take the win. (2) REIGN SUPREME’s seasonal debut was decent, and he can take a trip and get another share here. (7) KOPI LUWAK flew late to take a share last week and I can see him getting another slice here.

Race 4: SBOA FINAL 3YO FILLY TROT - Pick 4

(5) WILLYS HOME RUN lays over this field and it would take something out of the ordinary to get her beat. (9) SUE ANN raced okay vs. the choice, getting just shaded for place and she could provide some Exacta value here starting from a wide post. (3) R LIZA got a bit lucky when all the favorites broke stride last week. She is still an obvious contender but offers no value underneath the choice in an Exacta that will be underlaid. (4) RADICAL LEGACY, 2nd to the choice in her sophomore debut, should be part of the exotics again.

Race 5: SBOA FINAL 3YO FILLY PACE

(5) IT’S A LOVE THING paced a 52 2/5 back 1/2 in defeat in the elimination last week and that should have her perfectly primed for a top effort as she tries to knock off (4) PASS LINE. The latter was good winning her elim, and she is the obvious filly to beat. (9) LIGHTNING LIZZIE was impressive in defeat to Pass Line and she is improving rapidly. She has a tough task here starting from a wide post, but she can take a share. (6) SORCHA SEELSTER is another rapidly improving filly that can make this division interesting this year, but I prefer to use her underneath tonight.

Race 6: SBOA FINAL 3YO COLT and GELDING TROT - Pick 5

(7) WILLOWTIME’s only loss at two came when he broke, and he looks primed for another outstanding season considering he was only a tick off his lifetime mark in his winning qualifier here on 5/3; top call. How good is unbeaten (4) CONVOY HALL? We are probably going to find out tonight and I didn’t think many would be surprised if he answered the question with another win. (9) GRIFF was a strong 2nd to the choice in the Superfinal when last seen and he is worth a look at what should be a good price starting from the widest post tonight. (8) MASSTERCRAFT destroyed maidens in his sophomore debut, and he can take a share here.

Race 7: SBOA FINAL 3YO COLT and GELDING PACE

(3) FUNTIME BAYAMA was geared down in 25 4/5 winning his sophomore debut. Beat him to greet the cashier. (2) BEST NIGHT EVER’s form is improving, and I could see him sitting a trip and closing for 2nd in this third start back. (6) UNRIVALED HANOVER was 2nd to the choice at a big price and he has a good chance to take another share at a big square price here. (7) WIKIPEDIA flies home every week. I can see him closing to be part of the Tri or Super.

Race 8: 4YO and younger NW $15,000 LT

(1) WATCHING SUNSET raced great in defeat last week but he was a victim of pace and trip. He can beat these if he gets some race dynamics to swing his way this week. (4) ONYX BOVINO was also impressive in defeat last week in his sophomore debut and he has hit the board in every start. He would be no surprise. (2) BRINGITONHOMETOME adds Lasix and keeps Macdonald, and he is worth a price look for multi-race tickets. (3) PRICE CONTROL was 2nd to a well-meant winner in a solid effort from post 8. He should be good for at least a share in this spot.

Race 9: PREFERRED - Pick 4

(2) TAURASI finally got beat but it took a trip to Ohio and a 1:49 1/5 mile on a 5/8ths mile track in tough company to do it. He raced well there, and he is obviously still very sharp; top call. (6) LINEDRIVE HANOVER got cooked in a speed duel with Desperate Man in the Borgata final and he is an obvious good fit here returning to home soil. These two could engage in an exciting battle in the lane. (7) EMMETTS BUDDY comes to play every week and he can close for a share here. (5) SAULSBROOK VICTOR was solid last week winning in fast time, but this is tougher, and he likely closes for a slice.

Race 10: NW $15,100 L5 AE: NW $130,000 LT

(2) ROCKABILLY REBEL N obviously needed last week’s start after missing a month and he should get put into this race earlier by Filion. I’ll give him the nod. The choice’s stablemate, (1) MR IBIZA N was McNair’s choice, and he is sharp and dangerous; using. (6) ARIO HANOVER was no match for hot Control Heaven last week and he may find this spot easier, but I think he gets over bet based on his final time. I’d demand a price here. (8) RON likely sits back and closes for a small share tonight.

Race 11: 5YO and younger NW2 or $30,000 LT AE: 4YO NW $1,525 L3

(2) SERGEANT SLAUGHTER was aided by scratches and some issues encountered by rivals, but he still took a new life’s mark of 1:51 2/5 and he will be very tough in here if he repeats that effort. (10) BETTHEBEACH YANKEE had broken equipment before the start and was refunded and he still passed some rivals to finish 4th. He obviously got no favors at the post draw but that will push his price up and I’ll use him in the late Pick 4 because he has shown he is capable. (1) MAX PATRICK took a leg of the Spring Series over some decent horses, and he should be part of the exotics here. (6) TARQUINUS HANOVER broke chasing the choice last week. He can take a share here if he stays flat.

Race 12: 5YO and younger winners of 2 but not more than 4 or $52,750 LT

(2) SMOKESTACK has improved immensely in a short time in the Lester barn and there is no question about his intent which isn’t something you can be sure of with some of his rivals here. It looks like they will have to be very fast to beat him. (7) CHAIN GANG likely needed last week’s start where pace and trip were totally against him. He is capable here, but it he also likely has loftier goals for this three-year-old campaign. I wouldn’t take a short price. (9) LEAVE IT TO LEO’s four-year-old debut was good and Borth will likely put him into play leaving the gate. He is fast enough to beat these; using. (5) KAPTAIN KARLOS brings a good effort every week bit he keeps falling short. Another slice is likely his ceiling here. (3) BOB LOBLAW has missed two years so he will likely need one. I see him sitting a trip and taking a small share.
