Woodbine Mohawk Park: Analysis for Monday 2/3

John Rallis|Jan 31, 2025
Mohawk Logo 1.5

Top Pick Stats: 0-0/ $0; Best Bets: 0-0 / $0; Spot Plays: 0-0 / $0

Best Bet: ROYALTY BEER (RACE 4)

Spot Play: COLLECTOR S (RACE 10)

Early Pick 5: 2,5/2,5/1,5,6/6/6,7,8,9 = $9.60

Late Pick 5: 2,3,4,6/3,4/4,6,7,8/5,6/1 = $12.80

Pick 6: 6/6,7,8/2,4,6/3,4/4,7,8/5,6 = $18

Race 1: 5 YEAR OLDS & YOUNGER, NW 3 (OS 6) RACES OR $61,500 LIFETIME. **$75K Pick 5**

(2) FABULOUS FREDDIE stayed in along the cones and angled out at the top of the lane to make nice gains on a windy night that required you to be close to the action. He draws inside and should be tough to fend off if he’s within reach. (5) CENTURY JAGUAR stepped up in class and was aggressively handled in what was a strong 2nd-place finish. I’d expect similar tactics here in a race where he’ll be the one to chase down. (6) MRSTERY DEAL draws well and should be able to take advantage of his post position to secure early positioning; using underneath. (7) MOUNDS FOR ALL was never beating the winner in his latest but offered no pop when JMac moved him off the rail despite a 2nd-place finish; he can grab a share.

Race 2: PREFERRED.

(2) AMIGO VOLO disappointed as the favorite on 1/13 but was off close to a month coming into that contest. He will have James MacDonald back at the controls this evening, who has guided this $2.6million dollar earner to five wins in eight times when being paired together. (5) NEW RULES powered past the choice in his latest and should prove to be His biggest threat yet again. (3) PERFETTO picked up a share at this level last time out and he draws well enough to do the same here. (4) FRANKS ANGEL tried to cut the mile in his latest on a night where speed didn’t hold up; he can finish up for a piece.

[DRF BETS: Wager on tonight's Mohawk Park card at DRF Bets.com!]

Race 3: CLAIMING HANDICAP $18,000 TO $24,000. ALLOWANCES FOR AGE & SEX. ENTER IN MULTIPLES OF $1,000.

(6) J J TOMMY disappointed as the favorite last time out in what was a troubled-trip. The 6YO gelding got claimed out of that contest and will now make his return to the Shayne Barrington, who has 3 wins in 6 career tries when under his care; top call. (5) VINO LOUIE showed some interest late in the mile behind some rivals and could be a threat as they’re approaching the wire yet again. (1) HERESTHATMANAGAIN steps up here after coming off an impressive effort in his latest; he’s put forth strong showing when in the Bourassa barn and merits respect. (7) HURRIKANE CHEYENNE didn’t have much to offer as the choice in his latest; he has a license to improve.

Race 4: NW $14,000 LAST 5 OR NW $21,500 LAST 10 STARTS. AE: NW $105,000 LIFE.

(6) ROYALTY BEER has been ultra-impressive since returning to Ontario and is currently riding a four-race, win-streak during that span. Louis-Philippe Roy picks up the lines tonight and I think this trotter can handle the move up this evening. (5) TRUFFLES TOO finished up nicely late in the mile to be a good second; he draws the middle of the gate and will more than likely be forwardly placed in this spot. (4) RADIO LAB has been a very sharp claim for Carmen Auciello, winning three of his last four tries; he warrants respect here. (3) ALL GAS NO BREAKS was an upset winner in his latest and should be heard from late; he’s a contender in what I consider to be a wide-open race.

Race 5 :CLAIMING HANDICAP $30,000 TO $40,000.

(7) TANGO SEELSTER was never in contention in his latest when he got away 8th but showed some good interest late. His trainer, Justin Turcotte, was in the bike in that contest and will hand over the lines to driver Tyler Borth, who will have every opportunity to work out a winning trip in what is a live drive. (8) WRY has been racing tough at this class and has three-straight, 2nd-place efforts to show for it; he will race for the Marfisi barn tonight and should get a good piece. (6) B STONEY was a sick-scr in his latest but was a winner at this level on 1/13; he draws well and should be aggressively handled here. (9) PALLADIUM HANOVER has been finishing up really well in back-to-back, 3rd-place finishes and should be able to land somewhere on the ticket; tough draw.

Race 6: NW $8,250 LAST 5 STARTS. AE: OPT. CLM. $50,000.

(6) DEVILS ARCH finished up well along the inside to pick up a small share in what was his first start in three weeks. He drew the 10-hole in that contest and should appreciate his draw this evening and could work out a very nice trip because of it; giving him the nod. (4) COLD SNAPS trotted nicely to close for a share and another favorable draw should have her in a striking spot late; using. (2) BELLA CAVALLA will make her return to the Kyle Fellows barn and draws inside; he is a threat when on her game. (3) PIKACHU HANOVER disappointed as the favorite in his latest and will have every opportunity to work out a favorable trip.

Race 7: NW $32,750 IN 2024-25 (MIN 10 STARTS).

(4) WHATS THE POINT is coming off a 5th place effort at Flamboro downs in what was her first start in close to one month. That tightener should bode well for her coming into this contest and will be reunited with JMac, who guided her to a pair of victories in December. (3) WASTINGNOTIME had no chance to catch the leader but showed a lot of late interest. He was claimed out of that contest and will debut in the Mitch Tierney barn. He’s racing well and will be tough to fend off late with speed to chase. (6) NO ANGEL LIKE ME has raced well over her last four tries at Mohawk. She has one big move and if timed right, she could pick up a major piece here. (8) VICTOR INVICTUS fits nicely against this group here but will have to start from the far outside; he’ll likely be racing for a share.

Race 8: CLAIMING HANDICAP $12,000 TO $16,000.

(7) FROWNIES MIRACLE is coming off an underwhelming effort in his latest, but will be reunited with Louis-Philippe Roy, who had guided him to a pair of victories in four tries sitting behind him; he could improve. (8) BETTOR THAN PRIDE was aggressively handled on the class drop in his latest but didn’t have much to offer. He will now race for trainer Kyle Fellows and can put forth a good effort at his best. (4) KYLES ART opened up a lead in the stretch but got leg weary late; he has shown to have one good move late in the mile and can pick up a big piece if timed right. (6) GASCOIGNE SUNDAE has found new life since entering the Gerard Demers barn, with 8 wins in 13 starts for the conditioner and is one to be wary of in here.

Race 9: NW $2,800 LAST 5 STARTS OR NW $9,800 LAST 10 STARTS.

(6) EYES OF JUSTICE was under a good hold in between rivals with no real estate in his most recent start at Flamboro. He will start from the winningest post here at Mohawk and looks primed for a good effort this evening. (5) UPNAWAY BLUE CHIP is coming off efforts vs. tougher and should enjoy the company he keeps tonight; he was Louis-Philippe Roy’s choice over the one above. (8) ETERNALLY HANOVER is coming off a lackluster effort vs. much tougher but missed three weeks going into that contest; should be tighter here. (2) IM ABOVE AVERAGE draws inside here this evening and is one who can land on the ticket late.

Race 10: NW $4,000 LAST 5 STARTS OR NW $13,750 LAST 10 STARTS

(1) COLLECTOR S was 3rd on the inside and was stuck behind his stable mate who began to gap, forcing him to lose ground as they turned for home. When he shook loose, he was full of trot and should be coming into this contest poised for a big effort. (6) VALUABLE MISS hadn’t raced for three weeks going into her most recent effort; she draws well here and should be tighter going into it. (5) GIGONDAS draws well this evening and will be aggressively handled in this spot; he can get a piece. (8) MUSCLE FASHION returns to the big track after a couple of tries at Flamboro; he has the early footing to overcome the outside and can hit the ticket.

Race 11: HORSES THAT HAVE STARTED FOR A PURSE OF $9,000 OR LESS IN ONE OF LAST 4 STARTS.

(1) TYGA HANOVER is coming off a win at Flamboro and sneaks into this condition because of the purse money he raced for. He is classier than this group and should prove tough to beat. (7) ACAPULCO SUNBURN got picked off late in the mile after a hard fought stretch duel with the pace-setter. That was a strong effort and he merits respect here. (9) TROSA A will make his North American debut here after shipping in from Australia. He was a winner in his qualifier under a bit of urging from JMac and will add Lasix coming in. He’s intriguing, but I’d like to see one here. (6) BROOKDALE MIKI will race here for new trainer Gerard Demers and is capable of hitting the ticket. (4) HOWYOUPLAY THE GAME has been right there over his last couple of starts and draws well enough to stick around to hit the ticket.
