Woodbine Mohawk Park: Analysis for Friday 5/19

Garnet Barnsdale|May 17, 2023
Mohawk Logo 1.5

Top Pick Stats: 220 - 654 / $1,184.70 (-$123.30)

Best Bets: 36 - 59 / $138.70 (+$20.70)

Spot Plays: 12 - 59 / $73.80 (-$44.20)

Best Bet: URIEL BLUE CHIP (6TH)

Spot Play: KATYS DELIGHT (8TH)

Early Pick 5: 3,4,7/2,3,7/2,4/2,5,7/5,10 = $21.60

Late Pick 5: 4/2,4,5/1,3,4,7/1,4,5/4,6,9 = $21.60

Early Pick 4: 2,5,7/2,5,9,10/4/2,4,5 = $7.20

Late Pick 4: 2,4,5/4,7/1,4,5/4,6,9 = $10.80

Race 1: 5YO and Younger NW1 or $7,500 LT **Gtd. $100,000 Pick 5**

(7) DICE R OUT has fired two big kickers in fast races in both starts. He will blast for position one of these weeks and that may be tonight; top call. $300,000 yearling (3) TWIN B NATION had an impossible parked trip in a debut that featured slow early fractions and he still took a check. He could be much faster tonight; using. (4) BETTER OPTION's 2023 debut from post 10 is a toss. Tab the tote for clues here because there is a chance he can be much better than you see from that line. (6) BROOKDALE JOHNNY showed improvement last week and he can close for another slice here.

Race 2: 5YO and Younger NW2 or $30,000 LT

North America Cup hopeful (7) ACE OF ACES makes his sophomore debut in a good spot for Team Steacy and I'll give him a sight nod over streaking (2) NO CONTROL. The latter was dominant in the Spring series, but he has now missed close to a month which could be the deciding factor in this dash. Improving (3) NYTRO J raced tough in defeat last week and he is worth a look for deeper Pick 5 tickets. (5) NIGHTIME DANCER should be good for another small share in this spot.

Race 3: F&M 5YO and Younger NW2 or $30,000 LT

(4) FAVORITE BEACH looked good winning her sophomore debut and Macdonald sticks with her over two others; call to repeat. (2) DUCHENNE rallied for a share in the PA All Stars, and she should get a decent setup for her big late kick here; using. (8) SWEET AMIRA has some obvious quality having finished in the top 4 in the Breeders Crown last year, but this isn't a race she needs to win as she starts what is likely an ambitious sophomore campaign. I'd demand a price here. (10) GLENBORO chased impressive Mollop Hanover is a fast race, and she is worth using on the bottom of the exotics at a price.

Race 4: 5YO and Younger NW $15,000 LT - Pick 4

(2) MIDNIGHT NATION faces tougher here but the way he dominated maidens in his 2023 debut suggests that he will be up to it; call to repeat. (7) WARRAWEE YANKEE looks faster at three and his barn is going well right now; using. (5) SHADOWS TERROR raced tough in defeat last week and he should be in the mix from the outset tonight. (8) SAUBLE ACE looked good sailing past the leaders last week, but he will likely be farther back early in the mile this time. I'll use him underneath.

Race 5: F&M NW $14,500 L5 or $27,500 L8

This looks like a spot where dropper (10) GIAS SURREAL blasts to the front and leads her rivals on a merry chase. She gets top billing despite drawing widest. (5) VOELZ DELIGHT raced tough in defeat last week, picked off right on the wire. She is the other one that I’ll use in the multis. (9) PARISIAN BLUE CHIP is another dropper that should be in the mix but I'm not sure she gets the trip she needs starting from out there. (2) TWIN B BETTY is on a roll and there are worse longshots you could take a stab on.

Race 6: 3YO Colts and Geldings NW $5,000 LT - Pick 5

(4) URIEL BLUE CHIP found racing room too late in his debut or he would have been a winner at 31 to 1. The price drops significantly here, but he is the one to beat. (7) FADE TO LIGHT’s sophomore debut was good and he may have slowed the pace too much for his own good considering the final 1/4 was fastest but he still got picked off. He can improve here, and he is a threat. Debutant (8) BETTOR ON ICE is related to eight winners and the speed he showed in his most recent qualifier makes him a contender for at least a share at first asking. (5) CLOWN CAR finished with interest last week and he should be part of the exotics tonight.

Race 7: NW $4,000 L5 - Pick 4

(2) KEVIN ANTHONY should be more aggressive tonight on the class drop and he gets a slight nod in a tough race. (5) PHEONIX was used too hard, too early last week and he paid the price. Adding Lasix, he can beat these if he gets an easier trip. (4) ALL WRAPPED UP figures on the class drop, but he is hard to love at a short price because he tends to be trip dependent. Your call. (6) VICTOR INVICTUS will likely close for another small share here.

Race 8: F&M NW $4,550 L5 AE: OPT CLM $20,000

(4) KATYS DELIGHT was running over horses for the entire stretch drive last week, full of pace with nowhere to go. She finished the race loaded and she gets top call here, but don't expect to see the 10 to 1 morning line price. (7) TAKEYOURBREATHAWAY is 3 for 3 racing out of the Laver barn and she impressed powering up late to win last week. She is hard to leave out right now. (1) TWIN B TIPSTER raced tough in defeat last week and she is in the mix right back. (3) CHIEFS DREAM GIRL gets away from streaking Twin B Betty and she is another one that is in with a shot here.

Race 9: F&M NW $8,000 L5

(4) BETTER BE DONNA N raced tough at this level last week but lost to a rival that has been on fire lately. She gets the nod here. (1) TRAFALGAR drops multiple levels, and she is a logical contender vs. these; using. (5) SETTN A PRECEDENT is razor sharp now and she is another that could do here if she is close enough at the 1/8th pole. (2) IN THE MOOD was bottled up until it was too late last week then she finished evenly once free. She should be in the exotics mix here.

Race 10: F&M Claiming $35,000

(9) PREMIER BETTINA was right there in her first start for Montini and perhaps a bit unlucky in defeat. I'll give her top billing here. (4) COME ROLL WITH ME couldn’t fit this class any better and she is the clear horse to beat and tough to leave off multi-race tickets. (6) COZ IM SPECIAL was better in her second start for Barrington. She is worth using at a price on late Pick 4 and Pick 5 tickets. (1) GOLDEN LEADER should get an easier trip tonight and take a share. (2) KCS STARLITE took advantage of a slowing late pace to notch the upset last week. I prefer to use her underneath tonight.
