Woodbine Mohawk Park: Analysis for Friday 2/14

John Rallis|Feb 12, 2025
Mohawk Logo 1.5

Top Pick Stats: 14-74 /(-$75.90)

Best Bets: 2-7 / (-$6.80)

Spot Plays: 1-7 / (+6.00)

Best Bet: FOXY SEASIDE (Race 6)

Spot Play: SAULSBROOK OLYMPIA (Race 1)

Early Pick 5: 6/1,4,5,8/6,8/1,5,7/5,6 = $9.60

Late Pick 5: 2/5/3,4,8/1,3,7/1,3,5,10 = $7.20

Pick 6: 1,5,7/5,6/2/5/3,4,8/1,3,7 = $9

Race 1: FILLIES & MARES, NW $4,000 LAST 5 OR NW $12,250 L10 STARTS (W/O $15,000 L10 N/E) *75,000 GTD PICK 5*

(6) SAULSBROOK OLYMPIA was third-over behind stalled cover but was moving well in the late stages of the mile. She picks up James MacDonald tonight, who guided her to a victory the last time they were paired together (Feb. 9th - 2024) and I’ll give her the nod to kick off the card. (4) CHIEFS DREAM GIRL drops a few classes this evening and figures to be the one to beat because of it. She retains Phil Hudon who had his choice of two others in here. (3) REDLANDBETHANYJEAN worked out a nice trip from the rail last time but was second best to a strong winner. She should be able to work out a similar trip and can be a threat because of it. (1) BETTERNOTMACHME didn’t really fire off her trip in her latest. She takes a drop down tonight and can hit the ticket.

Race 2: FILLIES & MARES, NW $2,500 LAST 5 OR NW $5,200 LAST 10 STARTS

(4) ACEFORTYFOUR DAISY was summoned early off the gate in her latest and worked out a pocket trip behind a strong winner. She draws one spot further inside and is one I feel the most confident in backing in this spot. (8) FIRSTOFANERA takes a slight drop down back to this level where she was fourth two starts ago. She is handy enough to leave out from the outside and secure a good spot off the gate; using. (5) MYSTIC WILD ROSE was closing well up the inside to secure the show spot; she’s a little too camera shy for my liking to consider as a serious player but is a strong candidate to hit the ticket. (1) CHEVRONS BYPASS N never got involved from the 10 hole last time out and still managed to sneak in to grab a share. She draws better and can round out the bottom end of exotics.

[DRF BETS: Wager on tonight's Mohawk Park card at DRF Bets.com!]

Race 3: NW 2 (FM 3) RACES OR $29,000 (OS $33,850) LIFETIME. AE: ONTARIO SIRED 4 YEAR OLDS NW $7,200 IN 2025.

(8) HEY DUDE came off an even qualifier to score rather convincingly in his first start as a 3YO. He added trotting hopples and parked out to make the front but was able to hang on with relative ease, and should be in a good spot to double-up here. (6) WHEELIN MY BENTLEY trotted nicely in the lane to secure the show spot. He draws well enough where we should expect early speed out of him and that warrants a little more respect here. (4) PARADISE MONI added Lasix in his latest in what resulted in a 2nd-place effort. He went by the pace setter but came to halt, getting weak late. (3) NEVERLOSE FELIX is coming off a 5th-place effort in what was his first start in three weeks. He has a license to improve.

Race 4: FILLIES & MARES, 5 YEAR OLDS & YOUNGER, NW 3 RACES OR $72,750 LIFETIME.

(1) SWIFT TALKER missed about 5 weeks before her most recent start and drew the 10 hole in that contest. She closed well to be 6th and she should be primed for a good effort now, especially with an inside draw. (7) MOTHER MARY made a first over bid after taking support to the tune of 2/1 but faltered immediately. She’s one I think has more ability than what he saw in her most recent and will be one to possibly forgive and/or use on pick 5 tickets this evening. (5) CAUGHTSTEALINGHOME has notched back-to-back victories and has put herself in good spots in doing so. She draws well again and should be situated early off the car. (3) DEFININGTHE MOMENT was a winner in her most recent start before taking a month off. She had a qualifying prep where trainer Roger Mayotte guided her to a 2nd place effort under some urging, and looks like she might need a start before she gets things going.

Race 5: FILLIES & MARES, NW $8,000 LAST 5 STARTS OR NW $22,750 LAST 10 STARTS. AE: OPT. CLM. $50,000.

(5) ALABAMA HANNAH finished an even 4th in her latest when taking on tougher company overall. She takes a dip in class, draws the center of the gate and will retain James MacDonald who had his choice of two others in this contest. (6) LYONS LEGEND left out for early positioning and was stuck along the inside until halfway down the lane. When she angled out, she had absolutely nothing to offer, but merits some respect on the class drop alone. (7) COZ IM SPECIAL worked out a pocket trip in her latest but wasn’t getting to a strong winner. She’s been better since adding Lasix and raced best with a target to chase, which she’ll have here. (2) STONEBRIDGE HALO made a first-over bid in her latest and was unable to pose a threat to the pace setter. She can compete vs. this group.

Race 6: FILLIES & MARES, 5 YEAR OLDS & YOUNGER, NW 2 RACES OR $34,750 LIFETIME.

(2) FOXY SEASIDE was conservatively handled in her first start of 2025 off a pair of pretty strong qualifiers. She sat in along the cones and flew home to be 3rd when finding a seam, under tight lines to James MacDonald. I expect she will be tough to beat here off that effort, at what I expect will be a price at the shortest variety. (5) ROSE COLORDGLASSES is coming off a solid, 2nd-place effort in her most recent try and should be able to work out a favorable trip with her draw tonight; biggest threat to the choice. (3) SPACE CADEBT is coming off a trio of good efforts where she was showing some good late speed in each of those tries. I think it’ll be tough to beat the choice, but this is one I’d slot in as an exacta and tri player underneath. (9) I DREAM OF JEANIE was a 4th place finisher in her first start under new trainer Kyle Fellows. She’ll be able to flaunt her gate speed and stick around for a share.

Race 7: 5 YEAR OLDS & YOUNGER, NW 1 RACE (WINNERS FOR A PURSE OF $9,000 OR LESS 2 RACES) OR $10,750 LIFETIME.

(5) SMOKIN HOT SCOTT is coming off a pair of runner-up finishes to start off his career. He came first-up and towed the eventual winner in contention and should prove tough to beat in this group. (10) BEN LOOKIN is one we liked last week but he gapped the gate by a few lengths in his latest. He has a pair of wins to his name and fits in nicely with this group, but his post makes him tough to love. (6) LONGSHOT PANIC comes off a 3rd-place effort after making miscues in his two starts prior. He draws well and should have every chance to grab a big piece, so long as he paces. (7) JULIUS HANOVER has been closing well for shares and should have every chance to hit the ticket here, too.

Race 8: FILLIES & MARES, 5 YO & YOUNGER, NW 1 RACE (WINNERS FOR A PURSE OF $9,000 OR LESS 2 RACES) OR $10,000 LT.

(4) TH SANDRA DEE drops back down into a maiden after a non-competitive try in nw2 from pp10. She draws well coming into this effort and appears to have an edge over this group. (3) CALCITE raced well in defeat in her lifetime debut after what was a lackluster qualifying effort in preparation for it. This filly made a super aggressive brush to take the lead and if she can time it right, she might be tough to fend off. (8) YO JO made up ground from an impossible spot at London to finish a solid 4th. She has made a few miscues this year and has a tendency to gap the gate but should appreciate a longer stretch here this evening. (1) BETTRNREDDER has hit the board in 3 of her 5 starts this year after failing to do so in 9 starts as a 2YO and will have every chance to grab a piece here.

Race 9: FILLIES & MARES, NW $14,000 LAST 5 STARTS OR NW $32,750 LAST 8 STARTS.

(7) CENTURY JAMILA was surging late in between rivals at this class last time out and looks poised for a much bigger effort here this evening; top call. (1) GLENBORO drops out of the Preferred against some very sharp mares and should be able to work out a nice trip from the pole-position here. (3) LYONS BETTORDAY was making up ground against some quality mares and takes a drop back to a level where she was a winner two starts back; contender. (2) ANGOSTURA HANOVER comes off back-to-back, 2nd-place finishes and will likely be racing for a share in this spot.

Race 10: NW $2,650 LAST 5 STARTS (W/O $12,500 LAST 10 STARTS N/E).

(1) ARCHIMEDES had to avoid a bit of traffic trouble in his latest but trotted the lane well when he was clear of everything. He draws inside today and should have speed to chase here. (10) BUCK DANCER comes off a dominant win where he made a couple moves in the process. He draws the furthest outside but has the early footing to overcome it. (5) SPARTAN GENERAL was aggressively handled in his qualifier, en route to a dominant score. He’s the classiest and most talented trotter in this group, but has yet to win a race at first asking off a qualifier in his career. (3) MISTER MAGIC was a distant runner-up finisher to his stablemate and will be tough to leave off any tickets.

Race 11: POP UP SERIES: HORSES & GELDINGS 4 YEAR OLDS & YOUNGER, NW $25,000 OR NOT AVERAGING $1,500 PER START IN 2024-25 (MIN 10 STARTS).

(1) TRINIDAD was a strong second-place finisher in his first try on the big track and will take on company in this Pop Up Series this evening. He likes having a target to chase and should be able to work out a stalking trip from the rail. (10) WHY WOULDNT YA was bet down as the 4/5 favorite in his latest and never got clearance until he tried to slip up the inside late. He was passed by a couple of rivals who were charging to his outside and he should be in contention despite starting from the far outside this evening. (6) BOOTS was used a couple of times in a 4th place effort and will not debut for trainer Ben Hollingsworth. He draws well and retains Louis-Philippe Roy and is one of the main players here. (7) SMILE FOR MILES was making strong gains in the late stages of the mile, missing out by a head. He’ll be heard from late in the mile yet again and can land on the ticket. (9) LIL SEBASTIAN is coming off a dominant score at Flamboro and will try his hand at the big track this evening. He draws outside but can be good enough to land on the hi-5 ticket.
