Woodbine: Lucky Molar takes marathon
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Lucky Molar outstayed the competition to capture the 1 3/4-mile Valedictory Handicap, the $147,000 closing-day feature at Woodbine.
Malmaison set moderate fractions while being stalked by a host of runners, including favored Parose and Lucky Molar. Parose made a wide bid for the lead as they rounded the far turn for the second time, but hung in the drive, and Lucky Molar ($14.50) kicked in to prevail by a half-length over Defenman.
Malmaison finished another neck back in third in the 14-horse field, a neck in front of Steady Ruckus. The final time was 3:03.83.
"I had a lot of horse," said winning jockey Chantal Sutherland, who rode three winners on the 13-race card. "He wanted to go, but I was waiting and waiting."
* Timeform ($15) battled on the lead and drew clear in deep stretch to take the supporting feature, the $134,750 Kingarvie Stakes for Ontario-sired 2-year-olds.
