Woodbine: Inglorious tops field of nine in Woodbine Oaks

Michael Burns Inglorious has been installed as the 5-2 morning-line favorite for Sunday’s Woodbine Oaks.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Inglorious, who got back in the groove with an emphatic score in the 1 1/16-mile La Lorgnette here May 15, has been made the 5-2 morning-line choice for Sunday’s $500,000 Woodbine Oaks.

A field of nine was entered Thursday when the ceremonial draw for the Woodbine Oaks, the 1 1/8-mile race that is the premier test for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies, took place at the WEGZ Stadium Bar in nearby Vaughan.

Inglorious, who is owned by Donna and Vern Dubinsky and is trained by Josie Carroll, drew the No. 3 post.

“I think the post is just fine,” Carroll said. “It’s a long race – she’ll sit back and make one run. Any post really would have been okay.”

Luis Contreras, who rode five of the Woodbine Oaks entrants in their last starts, retains the mount on Inglorious.

Roxy Gap, who is heading straight to the Woodbine Oaks off a sharp victory in the seven-furlong Fury Stakes here April 30, has been made the second choice at 3-1 by Woodbine oddsmaker Ernie Perri. She will begin from post 7.

“I like the post, being outside a little bit,” said Mark Casse, who trains the homebred Roxy Gap for owner Eugene Melnyk. “It will give Patrick a chance to see how things are shaping up.”

Patrick Husbands, who rode Roxy Gap for the first time in the Fury, retains the mount.

Next in the morning line for the Woodbine Oaks is Bear It’s Time, at 4-1.

Emma-Jayne Wilson will ride Bear It’s Time for the first time as she begins from post 5 after winning the restricted Lady Angela Stakes over seven furlongs here May 23.

Next in line is Marketing Mix, at 6-1. Based in Kentucky with trainer Tom Proctor, Marketing Mix shipped up to finish a closing second in the Fury.

Jose Lezcano regains the mount on Marketing Mix, who drew the outside post.

Grand Style and Abrianna both have been pegged at 8-1 in the morning line.

Eurico Rosa da Silva, who guided the Kentucky-based Grand Style to victory in the 1 1/16-mile Princess Elizabeth Stakes here last fall, will return aboard the filly as she starts from post 4.

Abrianna, coming off a sharp maiden victory here for trainer Roger Attfield, will start from post 2 under import rider Javier Castellano.

Rounding out the Woodbine Oaks field, with post positions and odds, will be Spooky Kitten (post 8, 12-1); Silver Ami (post 6, 15-1); and Charismatically (post 1, 20-1)

Sunday’s 11-race card also will feature the $150,000 Plate Trial, the 1 1/8-mile race for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds that is the major local stepping-stone to the $1 million Queen’s Plate here June 26.

Bear’s Chill and Check Your Soul are the leading contenders for the Plate Trial.
