Woodbine: I’m Not Afraid stands out on Beyers

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – I’m Not Afraid exceeded the Beyer Speed Figure par of 77 for the first-level allowance level at Woodbine when she graduated earning a 79 Beyer on May 1. She should be favored in the second race Friday, a six-furlong allowance for fillies and mares that has come up fairly weak.

I’m Not Afraid commenced her career last August at Arlington by finishing a fast-closing second in a turf sprint. Trainer Dan Peitz tried her over Keeneland’s Polytrack next time out in October, and she wound up a close third with a career-high 82 Beyer.

Three weeks after a lackluster effort on the grass at Churchill on Nov. 4, I’m Not Afraid checked in third in a slowly run maiden special on the dirt there. She got the winter off and reappeared here May 1 with trainer Julia Carey, who sent her out for a come-from-behind triumph, from which the ninth-place horse exited to topple $32,000 maidens.

I’m Not Afraid has worked three times leading up to this engagement, and Eurico Da Silva stays aboard.

Descriptive, who is the lone speed on paper, will break from the rail under Omar Moreno.

Descriptive placed in one of her three starts last year at 2, which was a second in a six-furlong maiden special behind Delightful Mary, who was eventually crowned the champion 2-year-old filly in Canada.

Descriptive fought off a challenger on the lead before drawing off for a four-length score May 18. She got a 70 Beyer in that 5 1/2-furlong maiden special and has since been reunited with her original trainer, Mike McDonald.

Galloping d’Amour is mired in a 19-race slump. Her last victory came in a $25,000 conditioned claimer in September 2009.

Galloping d’Amour has been competitive at the first allowance category on occasion. She finished three-quarters of a length back in second after mounting a very wide bid May 22, which came two weeks after a third in another allowance sprint.

Leading rider Luis Contreras inherits the mount from Da Silva on Galloping d’Amour, who is trained by Sam DiPasquale.

Athenamore won her maiden at first asking over a modest field last September. She finished up the track in her only outing since then in the Nov. 14 Glorious Song Stakes.

Fabric has been idle since last July, when she captured her second straight Ontario-sired allowance.

Completing the field is Silver Bag, who hasn’t shown much since being claimed for $16,000 in December.
