Woodbine horses to watch: Week of Dec. 14
MONEY TALKS
Trainer: Bill Tharrenos
Last race: Dec. 7, 1st
Finish: 1st by 3 1/2
Beyer: 71
This 2-year-old ran greenly in each of his last two outings, both in Ontario-sired allowance routes, but managed a third-place finish and an easy victory last Saturday. He previously was ineffective in restricted sprint stakes but could be a factor in such company going long next year.
OVERTONE
Trainer: Mark Casse
Last race: Dec. 7, 3rd
Finish: 2nd by 2
Beyer: 64
She got away slowly in both of her excursions, when debuting in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes and in this maiden special route, where she made a big, wide move before flattening out. The expensive 2-year-old filly by Smart Strike appears to have some potential.
KAWAGUCHI
Trainer: Barb Pirie
Last race: Dec. 4, 2nd
Finish: 1st by 1 3/4
Beyer: 60
Normally a closer, this 5-year-old mare showed that she can run effectively on the lead when winning an $8,000 sprint after setting a slow pace. She was claimed from trainer Martin Drexler and could be headed to Gulfstream.
MERCENARY
Trainer: Dave Cotey
Last race: Dec. 6, 3rd
Finish: 3rd by 3 1/2
Beyer: 65
He raced in traffic late on the turn and early in the stretch before closing belatedly on the outside over an inside-favoring track in a $20,000 conditioned claimer.
