ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The best kept secret at Woodbine this week is that Friday’s card marks the 70th anniversary of the track’s official opening day in 1956. Surface-wise, a lot has changed over the years, including the introduction of synthetic racing in 2006 and the installation of an inner turf course in 2019. Trainer Tony Gattellaro runs Philip Banks and Sunday’s Well in the featured seventh race on the synthetic Tapeta, a six-furlong sprint for nonwinners-of-three Ontario-sired allowance stock and $40,000 claimers. Philip Banks will go favored under Ryan Munger, just like he has in his last three outings. The speedy 4-year-old graduated second time out with ease last August in an open maiden special weight sprint on the main turf, for which he got an 87 Beyer Speed Figure. Philip Banks earned a whopping 98 Beyer when crushing nonwinners-of-two Ontario-sired allowance types going six furlongs in October, after which he went to the shelf for seven months. When exiting the sidelines May 16, he was outrun for the lead before closing from third to finish second at a skimpy price. Sunday’s Well was claimed from a victory for $23,500 following three consecutive double-digit losses in October. He has been sidelined since a non-threatening fifth in a five-furlong inner dash Nov. 1. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! The son of Silent Name was among the leading 2-year-olds on the grounds in 2024, during which he was competitive in a host of stakes. He failed to win in six outings last year, however, but did finish fifth in the King’s Plate and third in the Queenston Stakes. Dewolf made his seasonal bow as a first-time gelding May 16. After stumbling at the break, he was checked on the turn en route to ending up third at this level. Rafael Hernandez will ride him again for trainer Kevin Attard. Paynes Spirit has been knocking on the door at this class. He wound up second two back in his six-furlong season opener before running second to favored Ciunas when going seven furlongs. He has earned Beyers in the low 80s in three of his last four starts while displaying effective tactical speed under Emma-Jayne Wilson. Next Pitch has filled out the trifecta behind Paynes Spirit in both of his starts at this stand. The closer was beaten just 1 1/2 lengths by the victorious next-out winner Regal Guest in his comeback. He was bumped at the start last time before racing inside until the quarter pole, where jockey David Moran got him rolling late on the outside to finish three lengths behind Ciunas. Signature Sir peaked last fall when graduating over Ontario-sired maidens before doubling up in an open nonwinners-of-two allowance. He got a career-best 82 Beyer in the latter event, after which he ran third at this level before getting the winter off. He has worked nicely since his dull season debut, a race he probably needed. Post time is 1 p.m. on an eight-race card with three inner turf events. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
