Woodbine Harness: Modern Legend sweeps Cam Fella series

DRF Staff|Mar 11, 2012

TORONTO, ONT - Despite making a break in stride at the half, Modern Legend, driven by Jack Moiseyev, extended his winning streak to eight as he swept the $100,000 Cam Fella Series final on Saturday evening at Woodbine Racetrack.

Sent off as the heavy 1/9 favourite, Modern Legend settled away in third at the opening quarter in :26 3/5, set by Arsenal (Billy Davis, Jr.).

Heading towards the half the parked-out Audreys Dream (Scott Zeron) was engaging the tempo-setter, Arsenal. The pocket-sitter, Sonic Dancer (Jody Jamieson), made a break in stride which caused Modern Legend to make a break, as well.

Modern Legend quickly regained stride and took command ahead of Audreys Dream past the half in :55 4/5.

Modern Legend would continue to lead his nine rivals past three-quarters in 1:23, before dashing away to a five and a quarter length victory under a comfortable hand-drive from Moiseyev to stop the timer in 1:50 4/5. Leafs And Wings (Randy Waples) came from off-the-pace to finish second, with Mach Wheel (Joe Hudon) finishing third.

“I thought he was the best horse in the race, so I wanted to drive him like he was the best,” Moiseyev said following the win. “When Jody’s horse made a break, he ran into me which caused my horse to break, but he quickly re-set.”

Once Modern Legend found his way to the front, Moiseyev was confident despite the break that he was the winner.

“At the top of the stretch, I didn’t think anyone was going to catch me. I didn’t really give him his head because he was pacing so strong. He is such a nice horse.”

Owned/trained and bred by Dave Drew, Modern Legend remains unbeaten in 2012 from five starts as his bankroll to $111,085. The four-year-old son of Modern Art-Ruby Cam paid $2.20 to win.
