Woodbine: Ginger Gold shines

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Favored Ginger Gold, last year's champion 2-year-old filly in Canada, captured the $500,000 Labatt Woodbine Oaks in a game performance at Woodbine.

Ginger Gold ($4), trained by Sid Attard, dueled with longshot Distant Roar through quick fractions of 22.63 and 46.35 seconds in the 1 1/8-mile event for 3-year-old fillies. She opened up a lead going into the far turn and never looked back, scoring by 1 1/2 lengths over a closing Silver Nithi.

Alpha Heat was another 2 1/2 lengths back in third. Gonetofarr, the 2-1 second choice, was fourth. The final time was 1:51.56.
