Woodbine: Fun in D’ Sun out to repeat turf success

Ron Gierkink|Oct 10, 2012

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Fun in D’ Sun will try to double up on the grass Friday at Woodbine in the featured second race, a seven-furlong allowance for 2-year-old fillies.

Fun in D’ Sun commenced her career with four straight runner-up placings, all under Omar Moreno. In her first two races, she was beaten four lengths in a pair of maiden special dashes on the Polytrack, including to future stakes winner Tara From the Cape.

Fun in D’ Sun was beaten 10 lengths Aug. 4 in a six-furlong maiden special won by Spring in the Air, who subsequently captured the Grade 1 Alcibiades. Three weeks later, she finished 2 3/4 lengths back in a seven-furlong turf sprint.

Fun in D’ Sun broke through in a one-mile maiden special on the grass Sept. 21, in her first start under Jermaine Bridgmohan. She received a 69 Beyer Speed Figure for that four-length tally and has since worked five-eighths in 1:02 for trainer Laurie Silvera.

Leinan is changing surfaces off a front-running second in a seven-furlong allowance. She aired in her only previous outing, a fast maiden dash at the Keeneland spring meet.

Floral Sky was scratched from last Saturday’s Grade 3 Mazarine Stakes, which was won her stablemate, Spring Venture.

Floral Sky graduated first time out at Churchill Downs in May and has been idle since ending up fifth there after a tough trip in the Grade 3 Debutante Stakes on June 23.

“She got in all kinds of trouble in her last start,” trainer Mark Casse said. “When she got up to Woodbine, she had gotten a little light. She grew taller and lighter, and we just gave her a little bit of a break.”

Bwana Go Fast also was withdrawn from the Mazarine. After graduating second time out, she ran fourth in two straight races, the Ontario Debutante Stakes and the allowance prep for the Summer Stakes. She trailed a 14-horse field most recently in the Grade 2 Natalma Stakes.

Rutherford Rd was a bust on the Polytrack before landing her turf debut at 20-1 in a seven-furlong maiden special Aug. 24. She faded to finish 11th in the Sept. 15 Natalma, a stakes that was won last year by her full sister, Northern Passion.

First-time starter Lady Minka has worked on the Polytrack and the turf training course, over which she covered a half-mile in 49 seconds on Sept. 30.

Rounding out the field is Primordia, who rode an outside bias to an emphatic victory over $20,000 maidens on the Polytrack on Sept. 21. She has little turf breeding to speak of.
