ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Mark Frostad won two runnings of the Mazarine Stakes during his term as trainer for Sam-Son Farm, with Silken Cat scoring by 3 1/4 lengths in 1995 and Hello Seattle romping by 14 in 1999. But whereas Silken Cat and Hello Seattle were odds-on favorites coming off impressive wins, Frostad’s candidate for this year’s Mazarine will be looking for her first victory. That would be Spanish Flower, who was bred in Kentucky by her owner, Robert S. Evans. And despite her maiden status, she is not without credentials heading into Saturday’s Grade 3, $150,000 Mazarine for 2-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles.“I’ve had her here since the beginning of the year, and she’s been training well all along,” Frostad said. “She just came along slowly; it took a while. She’s a very tall, big filly. We had to let her mature.”Spanish Flower made her career debut here at seven furlongs on the main track Aug. 17 and finished second, beaten a head by Unspurned, with Gary Boulanger in the irons.“I thought she’d win,” Frostad said. “She ended up down on the inside, and he had to use her early. She set the pace and just got caught.”Four weeks later, Spanish Flower swung back in the Grade 2 Natalma at one mile on turf and again finished second, beaten three-quarters of a length by Llanarmon. Ready to Act, invading from New York for trainer Chad Brown, had opened up a two-length lead in midstretch and appeared to be headed for victory when she veered in sharply after being hit right-handed and unseated rider Rajiv Maragh.“My filly sort of had to check and then came again,” Frostad said. While Spanish Flower will be trying two turns for the first time in the Mazarine, the same is true for all of her opponents.“I think she’ll be fine with it,” Frostad said, “but you never know until you try them.”Frostad also has entered Zubi Zubi Zu, a Kentucky-bred who won a six-furlong maiden $32,000 claimer in her only start, in the Mazarine.“She ran a good race, but there wasn’t much competition,” Frostad said. “She wants to go long, but this is a big step up. We’ll have to see.”Llanarmon and Unspurned, both trained by Roger Attfield, also are in the Mazarine lineup and breezed four furlongs on the main track here Wednesday. Returning rider Emma-Jayne Wilson guided Llanarmon through a 49-second clocking, while Justin Stein, who has been aboard Unspurned for her two starts, was up for a 48-second drill.Unspurned finished sixth in the Natalma after having to jump over the fallen Maragh with a furlong left to run.Rounding out the Mazarine’s field of eight will be Appreciating and Madly Truly, the third- and fourth-place finishers in the Natalma for trainer Mark Casse; Tamazula, invading from Illinois off a fourth-place finish in the one-mile Arlington-Washington Lassie; and Morant Bay, making her stakes debut after winning her maiden over six furlongs last out.Ami’s Holiday works for GreyAmi’s Holiday, prepping for Sunday’s Grey Stakes, breezed four furlongs in 49 seconds here Wednesday under regular rider Luis Contreras.“It was perfect,” said Josie Carroll, who conditions the homebred 2-year-old for Ivan Dalos. “He did exactly what we wanted him to do. He already had some solid works under him.”Ami’s Holiday, bred in Ontario, has seen action just once, winning a six-furlong maiden race in impressive fashion here Sept. 1, and will be stretching out to 1 1/16 miles for the Grade 3, $150,000 Grey.Carroll and Contreras will be in Illinois on Saturday with Lukes Alley for the Hawthorne Derby, a Grade 3, $200,000 race for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles on turf. Lukes Alley, a promising colt who races for his breeder, Eugene Melnyk, will make his stakes debut in the Hawthorne Derby.Ria Antonia sold, heads to BelmontRia Antonia, who made her first three starts here for trainer Ricky Griffith, has been sold and will make her first appearance for Looch Racing Stable in Saturday’s Grade 1 Frizette Stakes at Belmont.“We decided to cash in our chips,” said Griffith, who conditioned Ria Antonia for his son, Kyle. “She left last week.”Ria Antonia, a Kentucky-bred who was a $9,000 yearling purchase at Fasig-Tipton’s October sale, finished fifth when debuting in the five-furlong My Dear Stakes here July 6 and then graduated impressively when facing males at six furlongs two weeks later. In her most recent outing Aug. 24, Ria Antonia again took on males in the seven-furlong Swynford Stakes and finished fourth, beaten 6 3/4 lengths by Conquest Titan but just 1 1/2 lengths for second money.Ria Antonia was entered in the Deputy Jane West here Sept. 21 but was scratched after the sale was finalized the day before that stakes.Zensational Bunny soldZensational Bunny, an impressive debut winner here last Friday for trainer Pat Parente and owner Surjit Hans, has been sold for an undisclosed sum to owner Gary Barber.Purchased in Ocala, Fla., for $20,000 in June, the Kentucky-bred daughter of Zensational was a wire-to-wire, three-length winner of her 5 1/2-furlong race and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 81.“Right now, we’ll probably just look for an allowance race for her,” Casse said. “The Glorious Song would be a long-term target.”The $125,000 Glorious Song, a seven-furlong race for 2-year-old fillies, will be run here Nov. 23.◗ Jockey David Moran will serve a three-day suspension Friday through Sunday after the stewards ruled he initiated a chain reaction of interference in the first race here last Saturday. Moran, riding Stevie Loves Women, finished first, but the horse lugged in through the final sixteenth of a mile, causing traffic problems for several opponents. Stevie Loves Women was disqualified and placed fifth.
