Woodbine eyes common pools

Bill Tallon|Apr 01, 2005

The Woodbine Entertainment Group has applied to place wagers directly into commingled pools at The Meadowlands in New Jersey and Calder Race Course in Florida, and it plans to pursue applications at tracks in California and New York.

Steve Mitchell, Woodbine's senior vice president and CFO, said he is hoping to see betting into The Meadowlands by June.

Last fall, the United States lifted its 30 percent withholding tax on foreign bets made into U.S. pools, paving the way for commingled pools.

"Canadian tracks are 100 percent committed to this project - it's the right thing to do for our customers," said Mitchell. "We've made some progress, but it's a complicated regulatory process."
