Woodbine: Don's Folly delivers as 2-1 favorite in Debut

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Don’s Folly came on strongly from well back under Emma Wilson to capture Saturday’s $102,400 Debut Stakes, Woodbine’s opening day feature.

There was a fast, contested pace in the five-furlong sprint for older Ontario-sired runners, and a stalking Daniel Be Good emerged with the lead at the quarter pole. Don’s Folly began to mount a four-wide rally heading into the turn, and he wore down Daniel Be Good in the final furlong to score by three-quarters of a length, in a time of 57.53 seconds. D’s Legend Storm closed for third in the 11-horse field.

Wilson also rode Don’s Folly in last year’s Debut, when he finished a fast-closing second after breaking from the one-hole.

“I had a clean run this time,” said Wilson. “He dug in real hard the last sixteenth of a mile to get by Daniel Be Good.”

Don’s Folly ($6.60) collected $60,000 for owner Don Cole and trainer Ian Black.

* Trainer Wesley Ward won his fifth race on the card in the ninth with favored Magoo. Ward, who ran six horses on the card, also sent out Miss Lulu Belle and Goodeveningofficer to run one-two in the fifth. Apprentice Juan Delgado rode four of the Ward winners, and Jesse Campbell piloted Miss Lulu Belle.
