Wood sends four in Texas Classic Futurity
Lone Star Park has saved the best for last, closing out its Quarter Horse meet Saturday night with the Grade 1, $1 million Texas Classic Futurity. The race is the richest in the state and it will be supported by two other stakes, including the Grade 1, $362,848 Texas Classic Derby.
Trey Wood, who is vying for the training title at Lone Star, qualified a quartet of 2-year-olds for the 10-horse Texas Classic Futurity. High Plains Perry set the fourth-fastest qualifying time for the 400-yard race. Wood will also send out seventh-fastest qualifier Tough to Be, ninth-fastest qualifier Jess Paint Ur Wagon, and 10th-fastest qualifier Percyjones.
There were 12 trials for the Texas Classic. The races were run Oct. 22 and the fastest time of the night belonged to Koolnfamous, who covered 400 yards in 19.81 seconds. He will break from the rail in the finale, and will be ridden by Esgar Ramirez, who was aboard for the trials. Koolnfamous is two starts removed from a sixth-place finish in the $3 million All American Futurity. Toby Keeton trains Koolnfamous for Gene White, Wayne Metcalfe, and Jerry Cate.
Jockey G.R. Carter qualified four horses for the Texas Classic Derby, and for the finale he will be aboard Grade 1 winner First Valiant Sign. First Valiant Sign was the third-fastest qualifier for the 440-yard race, having won his Oct. 21 trial at Lone Star. He will break from post 10 for trainer Michael Joiner.
Joiner has four horses in the Texas Classic Derby, all qualified by Carter. Jess B Heroic was the fastest qualifier, having won his trial by 1 1/4 lengths in 21.47 seconds. Cody Jensen has the mount on Jess B Heroic. Joiner’s other runners are McClintock B and Jess Burnin.
Wood will counter with Patriot Pearl and Appolitical Streak in the Texas Classic Derby.
◗ Aberdonian will attempt to win his third straight race when he runs in the $303,000 Black Gold 440 Championship Futurity on Saturday at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla. He was the fastest qualifier in the 10-horse field.
Aberdonian won his 440-yard trial by 2 1/2 lengths in 21.73 seconds Oct. 28 at Will Rogers. Eddie Willis trains the horse, who began his streak with a Sept. 10 trial win at Will Rogers.
