Hit Show, the Grade 3 Withers winner, drew the extreme outside in a bulky field of 13 3-year-olds entered Wednesday for Saturday’s Grade 2, $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. The Wood’s top five finishers earn qualifying points (100-40-30-20-10) to the May 6 Kentucky Derby. None of the 13 horses entered in the Wood currently rank among the top 20 in qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby. Hit Show and his Brad Cox-trained stablemate Slip Mahoney, the Gotham runner-up, both have 20 points so a top three-finish for either one should get them into the field. Slip Mahoney drew post 5. Clear the Air, who drew post 6 in the Wood, is cross-entered in Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Blue Grass at Keeneland. Trainer Will Walden indicated Wednesday morning he wanted to evaluate both fields before making a decision, but was leaning toward running in the Blue Grass. The Wood, which will go as the last of 11 races, will be shown nationally on FOX in a 30-minute broadcast from 6-6:30 p.m. Eastern. The Wood draw, from the rail out, is: Dreamlike (Jose Ortiz), Shadow Dragon (Eric Cancel), Knox (Jose Gomez), General Banker (Frankie Pennington), Slip Mahoney (Dylan Davis), Clear the Air (Sheldon Russell), Arctic Arrogance (Jose Lezcano), Lord Miles (Paco Lopez), Crupi (Kendrick Carmouche), Uncle Jake (Jevian Toledo), Classic Catch (Trevor McCarthy), Mr. Swagger (Carlos Olivero), and Hit Show (Manny Franco). :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! Also entered are Today’s Flavor, Bold Journey, Expressman, Little Vic, White Abarrio, and Doppelganger. The Grade 3, $250,000 Gazelle, which offers 200 qualifying points toward the May 5 Kentucky Oaks, drew a field of six led by the Chad Brown-trained pair of Occult, the Busanda winner, and Shidabhuti, the Busher winner.Trainer Todd Pletcher has entered recent acquisition Frosty O Toole and Gambling Girl. Capella and Promiseher America complete the field. The Gazelle will go as the third.
