Wonder Gal may not be done

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Plans for Wonder Gal, the 13 1/2-length winner of the Ladies Handicap last Friday, were in flux Monday as her new connections decide whether to breed her or race her again.
Trainer Leah Gyarmati said Wonder Gal came out of the Ladies in good order and that owner Bernard Cleary is contemplating options for the 5-year-old New York-bred mare. Cleary, who races as Clearview Stable and owns Clearsky Farm, purchased Wonder Gal a few weeks ago primarily as a broodmare prospect.
Gyarmati said that if Cleary decides to run her again, the Grade 2, $300,000 Barbara Fritchie at Laurel or the $150,000 Heavenly Prize Invitational here are possible next spots.
“We’re thinking about the Barbara Fritchie for lack of better options,” Gyarmati said Monday.
The Barbara Fritchie on Feb. 18 is run at seven furlongs. Wonder Gal finished fifth in that race last year, but Gyarmati said Wonder Gal wasn’t doing as well at this time last year as she is doing now.
The Heavenly Prize will be run at 1 1/16 miles over the inner track March 4. Gyarmati likes the Heavenly Prize because of the timing and the fact that it has a very similar configuration to the Ladies, which was run at a mile and 70 yards.
“The way she’s doing now, it’d be interesting to see how she’d run in that same race,” Gyarmati said.
Wonder Gal earned a 96 Beyer Speed Figure in the Ladies.
