Wonder Gadot, Horse of the Year in Canada, retired

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Wonder Gadot, the 2018 Canadian Horse of the Year, has been retired by owner Gary Barber, trainer Mark Casse said on Tuesday.
Wonder Gadot was Canada’s champion 2-year-old filly in 2017. After enduring a heartbreaking loss in last year’s Kentucky Oaks, she also finished second in the Woodbine Oaks.
Wonder Gadot went on to crush the boys in both the Queen’s Plate and Prince of Wales Stakes, performances that were instrumental in her being voted the Sovereign Award for Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old filly last year.
This year, Wonder Gadot started twice, both times at Oaklawn, where she finished sixth in her last outing in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom before being shipped back to Woodbine.
“She had done so much,” Casse said. “I thought if we were going to do anything, we’d give her a little more time, and it just didn’t make sense. She may be sold in November. That’s normally what Gary does.”
Wonder Gadot, a daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, won five of 18 starts and nearly $1.8 million.
