SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The recent improvement from Fitz Right has left trainer Chad Brown eager to see how she performs in the most prestigious race of her career in Friday’s Grade 2 Wonder Again Stakes at Saratoga. Fitz Right won an allowance race at a mile on turf by 5 1/2 lengths at Tampa Bay Downs in January, her first start since a last-place finish in a field of six in the Chelsey Flower Stakes at Aqueduct last November. “She had a nice comeback race at Tampa,” Brown recalled earlier this week. “I was really surprised. It was her breakthrough.” Three months later, Fitz Right won her first stakes in the $150,000 Memories of Silver Stakes at a mile on turf April 26 at Aqueduct, closing from fifth to win by 3 1/2 lengths as the 7-5 favorite. “We gave her a chance to step up last time and she was very impressive,” Brown said. “I think she continues to get better. I really like the way she is coming into this.” :: Bet the Belmont Stakes with confidence! Betting Strategies by Mike Beer and David Aragona feature exclusive wager recommendations! The $300,000 Wonder Again Stakes, for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles on turf, drew a field of eight. Pashmina, 11th in the Kentucky Oaks on May 1 at Churchill Downs, will start if the race is switched to the main track. Fitz Right, who races for the partnership of Michael Dubb, William Lawrence, the Elkstone Group, and Michael Kisber, is one of five stakes winners in the field along with Coach Mazzula, Lion Lake, Quiet Street, and Time to Dream. Coach Mazzula, trained by Brittany Russell, won the Hilltop Stakes at a mile on turf May 15 at Laurel Park by leading throughout. She is likely to set the pace in the Wonder Again. Fitz Right, meanwhile, has won from off the pace this year. “She’s shown a good turn of foot in her first two starts, which I was pleased to see,” Brown said. “Sometimes you give these horses a little time to mature and they really improve. This is one of them.” Lion Lake, trained by Brendan Walsh, will be well backed to end a two-race losing streak since an 11-1 upset in the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride Stakes at a mile at Gulfstream Park in February. Lion Lake was third by a neck in two Grade 2 turf stakes in Kentucky earlier this spring, the Appalachian Stakes at a mile on April 4 at Keeneland and the Edgewood Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on May 1 at Churchill. In the Edgewood, Lion Lake took a narrow lead in the stretch but was unable to sustain the effort, losing to the Walsh-trained Imaginationthelady, who closed from off the pace. “She ran very well both times, and she got beat by a top-class filly,” Walsh said of the Edgewood. Lion Lake drew the outside in the Wonder Again Stakes and is likely to be forward early. “She seems like she keeps improving,” Walsh said. “I think it’s a question of it all coming together.” Quiet Street, who won the Untapable Stakes at Kentucky Downs last September, and Time to Dream, who won the P.G. Johnson Stakes for 2-year-old fillies on turf at Saratoga last August, run from off the pace. :: DRF Belmont Stakes Packages: Save big on PPs, Clocker Reports, Betting Strategies, and more. Quiet Street, trained by Bill Mott, led in the stretch of the Memories of Silver before fading to finish third by 4 1/2 lengths. Time to Dream, trained by Todd Pletcher, was seventh in the Edgewood, beaten only 2 1/4 lengths after a wide rally. “I’m looking forward to getting her back on the Saratoga course,” Pletcher said. The other runners in the field are the Brown-trained Tax Holiday, who won a maiden race at Aqueduct in her second start on April 16; Soloist, who was third in the Cleopatra Handicap on May 13 at Horseshoe Indianapolis; and Call On Me, who was third in an allowance race on May 7 at Churchill. Brown said Tax Holiday is ready for a big race in her stakes debut. “I’ve always thought a lot of her,” he said. “She’s training like she’s ready to take another step forward. Is it enough of a big step to win this race? I’m not sure. She’s trending in the right way.” :: Get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports straight from the morning workouts.
