Wolfson targeting Woodbine turf stakes

MIAMI - After successfully invading Kentucky last weekend, trainer Marty Wolfson will now turn his attention north of the border to Woodbine where he plans to send Golden Strategy and Ecclesiastic for graded stakes on Oct. 21.

Wolfson shipped four horses to Kentucky Downs for the Kentucky Cup Turf card, coming away with a victory by Art Moderne in the Franklin Stakes as well as third-place finishes by Ecclesiastic and Golden Strategy in the Kentucky Cup Sprint and Turf.

Wolfson, who moved into a tie for fourth in the local standings with Eddie Plesa Jr. following the impressive debut victory by Indy's Alexandra in Saturday's third race, is aiming Ecclesiastic for the Grade 2 Nearctic at six furlongs on turf and Golden Strategy for the $2 million Canadian International.

"I thought Golden Strategy ran great in the Kentucky Cup for his first start on grass," said Wolfson. Like the Kentucky Cup, the Canadian International will be

decided at 1 1/2 miles on turf.

Art Moderne gave Wolfson and owner Edmund Gann their fourth winner from as many starters since they combined forces for the first time earlier this year. Wolfson said he plans to run Olympic, who is 2 for 2 since shipping to Calder, for Gann in the Grade 3 Spend a Buck here Oct. 13.

Annabill succeeds in turf debut

Like Golden Strategy, Annabill ($19.60) had never started on grass before competing in Saturday's $50,000 Capital Request Stakes, but she displayed a penchant for the surface and rallied to a three-quarter-length victory over Running Lass. The win was the third in 10 starts this season for Annabill, the former claimer who captured the Chaposa Springs Handicap over the main track here in her 2006 finale.

Apprentice Junior Alvarado rode Annabill, a daughter of Outflanker, to victory for trainer Milt Wolfson.

Formal Miss, the lukewarm 2-1 favorite in a field of 11 fillies and mares, raced within easy striking distance but lacked a sufficient rally down the stretch and finished a disappointing fifth.

Cozzi Capital did well to finish third in the Capital Request despite a horrific trip that began when her rider, Ray Fuentes, briefly lost his left iron after taking up sharply along the hedge entering the clubhouse turn. Cozzi Capital had to steady again entering the far turn before finishing with good courage after swinging well wide into the stretch.

Sacred Realm to Cassidy Stakes

Trainer Phil Gleaves reports that he is pointing the undefeated 2-year-old filly Sacred Realm to the $90,000 Cassidy Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs Oct. 13.

Sacred Realm, perfect in two starts, is a homebred daughter of Mutakddim owned by Peter Vegso.

"I think she bounced a little in her last start off her big maiden win," said Gleaves. "For now 5 1/2 furlongs should be a good distance for her."
