WLKY-TV in Louisville has been awarded the Media Eclipse Award for Local Television for a feature that focused on the 75-year-old trainer Tom McCarthy, the award's sponsors announced Monday. This is the second Local Television award for the station, which is located in the heart of horse country. The feature was produced by John Boel and Scott Eckhardt, who wrote, narrated, and produced the 2006 award-winning feature "Final Foal." "Given all of the excitement and terrific stories to come out of horse racing this year, we are ecstatic and extremely honored to win the Eclipse Award again," Eckhardt said in a news release. The feature was broadcast on April 29 during a program that previewed the 2009 Kentucky Derby. McCarthy emerged onto the Derby scene after the only horse he trains, General Quarters, won the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland at odds of 14-1 on April 11. McCarthy is a retired Louisville-area school teacher.
