Risk Taking was beaten eight lengths and Overtook was beaten 9 1/2 when the two debuted in the same maiden race last October at Belmont Park. The two well-bred colts from high-profile connections have improved since then. Exactly how far they’ve come in four months will be evident Saturday when Risk Taking and Overtook make their stakes debuts in the Grade 3, $250,000 Withers for 3-year-olds at Aqueduct. The Withers, which offers its top four finishers qualifying points toward the May 1 Kentucky Derby, is run at 1 1/8 miles. It will go as race 8 on a nine-race card that begins at 1 p.m. Risk Taking, a son of Medaglia d’Oro trained by Chad Brown for Seth Klarman, has a bottom-side pedigree that suggests he would prefer turf. But following his seventh-place finish in that Oct. 10 dirt race, Risk Taking finished sixth on turf at Aqueduct in November. Four weeks later, Brown equipped Risk Taking with blinkers and stretched him out to 1 1/8 miles on dirt, and the horse responded with a 2 1/2-length victory. That he’s had three starts and a win at the Withers distance bodes in his favor. “I think it’s a big plus early in the year if you’re proven to go that far, and the fact he has three races under his belt, he’s got some seasoning to him,” Brown said. :: Want to get your Past Performances for free? He brought $1 million as a yearling and has high-powered owners that include Vinnie and Teresa Viola, Mike Repole, and the Coolmore connections of Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, and Susan Magnier. Following a fourth-place finish in his debut, Overtook was stretched out to 1 1/8 miles in a Nov. 8 maiden race and finished third, 21 lengths behind Known Agenda and Greatest Honour, who finished heads apart. Greatest Honour has since come back to win two straight, including last Saturday’s Grade 3 Holy Bull at Gulfstream. Known Agenda came out of that race to finish third in the Remsen Stakes and is among the choices in Saturday’s Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay Downs. Overtook made a long sustained run to win a one-mile maiden race by two lengths on Dec. 20. Manny Franco rides from post 6. Pletcher also runs Donegal Moon, a son of Uncle Mo, who is coming off a maiden victory going a one-turn mile on Dec. 12 at Gulfstream Park. “I think mile and an eighth is what he would be looking for now,” Pletcher said. “Now, it’s a matter of a class test.” Kendrick Carmouche rides Donegal Bay from post 7. Capo Kane, a son of 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, has won two straight, including the one-turn mile Jerome by 6 1/4 lengths here on New Year’s Day. “I think it was a good win for him, I like the way he pulled away at the end and kept going. His ears were up, so he wasn’t full out,” trainer Harold Wyner said. “I think we’re going to see an improvement from his last race to this race.” Eagle Orb, second in the Jerome, Shackqueenking, Royal Number, Civil War, and Mr. Doda complete the field.
