WinStar offers season to Tiznow to female winner of Breeders' Cup Classic

Glenye Cain Oakford|Sep 27, 2011

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Ten years after Tiznow became the only horse to win back-to-back Breeders’ Cup Classics, WinStar Farm has announced it will give a breeding season to the stallion for any filly or mare who wins the Nov. 5 race at Churchill Downs this year.

Tiznow, the 2000 Horse of the Year, stood at WinStar this year for $75,000 live foal. He won the 2000 and 2001 Classics and is the sire of such runners as 2005 champion juvenile filly Folklore, 2008 Canadian champion Bear Now, 2009 Dubai World Cup winner Well Armed, and 2011 male Classic contender Tizway, among other Grade 1 performers.

WinStar says the complimentary breeding season will be available for either the 2012 or 2013 breeding seasons.

WinStar recently signed on as a corporate partner of the 2011 Breeders’ Cup and “is hoping to encourage some of the top fillies and mares in training to follow in Zenyatta’s footsteps,” according to the Versailles, Ky., farm’s announcement.

Among possible female starters in this year’s Classic are last year’s champion 3-year-old filly Blind Luck, winner of the Vanity earlier this year, and her rival Havre de Grace. Havre de Grace bounced back from a nose defeat in Blind Luck’s Delaware Handicap win this year to beat males in the Woodward, her most recent start.

“The last few years, we’ve had the treat of watching some special fillies and mares in racing, and this year is no different,” WinStar president Elliott Walden said. “Nothing would be a greater honor to Tiznow’s accomplishment 10 years ago than seeing the best fillies and mares face the best boys in front of a primetime national TV audience.”
