WinStar Farm to stand G1 Florida Derby winner Tappan Street

Press Release|Aug 25, 2026

Tappan Street, decisive winner of the 2025 Florida Derby (G1) and a son of perennial leading sire Into Mischief, has been retired and will enter stud at WinStar Farm, it was announced today. A stud fee for the 2027 breeding season will be announced at a later date.

“Tappan Street is an elite son of Into Mischief from an outstanding family,” said Liam O’Rourke, WinStar Farm’s director of bloodstock services. “He stamped himself among the leaders of his generation with a dominant win in the Florida Derby. The Florida Derby is a very important race to the Stud Book and a great measure of talent. We can’t wait to show him to breeders, and I’m confident they will see why he commanded seven-figures as a yearling.”

In just his third career start, Tappan Street delivered a statement victory in the $1 million Florida Derby, becoming the only horse to defeat subsequent Horse of the Year Sovereignty during his 3-year-old campaign. With that authoritative victory, Tappan Street firmly established his stallion potential, placing him on the path of previous Florida Derby winners who went on to become powerhouse sires like Tiz the Law, Nyquist, Constitution, Quality Road, Scat Daddy, Empire Maker, Harlan’s Holiday, Unbridled’s Song, and Unbridled.

In the $1 million Florida Derby, Tappan Street seized command in midstretch and powered home to win by 1 ¼ lengths over next-out Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Sovereignty. In victory, Tappan Street covered 1 1/8 miles in a rapid 1:49.27, the fastest nine furlongs by a 3-year-old at Gulfstream Park in 2025, and faster than recent Florida Derby winners Commandment, Forte, White Abarrio, Tiz the Law, and Audible.

Campaigned by WinStar Farm LLC, CHC Inc., Cold Press Racing, and Qatar Racing, and trained by Brad Cox, Tappan Street burst onto the scene as a 2-year-old in 2024, winning a seven-furlong maiden special weight at Gulfstream Park by 1 ¾ lengths, getting the distance in 1:23.46 and earning an 84 Beyer Speed Figure in his career debut. The final clocking was the fastest seven-furlong time by a juvenile in a maiden special weight at Gulfstream in 4 ½ years.

Following his impressive debut tally, Tappan Street immediately proved his class by jumping straight into graded stakes company. Making his sophomore bow in the $250,000 Holy Bull S. (G3) at Gulfstream Park, he seized the lead at the five-sixteenths pole, finishing a determined second to eventual multiple Grade 1 winner Burnham Square and drawing nearly 10 lengths clear of the third-place finisher. After a nine-month layoff in the second half of 2025, Tappan Street returned to the races in dominant fashion, winning a one-mile Gulfstream Park allowance as the prohibitive favorite.

“Tappan Street showed us from day one that he was an exceptional athlete,” said trainer Brad Cox. “His final time when breaking his maiden going seven furlongs at Gulfstream as a 2-year-old vindicated our hope for him. His win in the Florida Derby over Sovereignty was a unique accomplishment that no other 3-year-old can match.”

By Into Mischief, the leading North American General Sire for seven consecutive years and bred on the Into Mischief/Distorted Humor cross that has resulted in sires such as Life Is Good and Practical Joke, Tappan Street was a $1 million acquisition out of the St. George Sales consignment at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale. Bred in Kentucky by Blue Heaven Farm, Tappan Street hails from a prolific female family. His dam, Virginia Key, by Distorted Humor, is Grade 2-placed and a half-sister to Grace Adler, winner of the Del Mar Debutante (G1), and Pimlico Special (G3) winner and multiple Grade 1-placed Pyrenees. This is also the family of Whitney S. (G1) winner Bullsbay.

“Tappan Street was a standout yearling and among the most expensive we’ve ever purchased,” noted David Hanley, WinStar Farm’s senior vice president/bloodstock services. “He matured into an exceptional physical specimen, and any replication should be well received commercially.”
