Winning Image wins the What A Summer Stakes
Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club Eight-time stakes winner Winning Image will try to close out her career with her first graded victory in the Grade 2 Barbara Fritchie Handicap.

Winning Image was supposed to retire after running one last race in mid-February. Jockey Tony Black already announced his retirement 13 months ago.

Yet on Saturday at Pimlico, the 7-year-old mare Winning Image and the 62-year-old Black will reunite for the Primonetta Stakes, one of four $100,000 races on a card topped by the Federico Tesio Stakes for 3-year-olds with aspirations of running in the Preakness or Belmont Stakes.

Winning Image was scheduled to make the final start of her career in the Grade 2 Barbara Fritchie Handicap at Laurel Park, but when a snowstorm postponed the race one week and a quarantine was imposed at her home track, Parx Racing, Winning Image had to stay in the barn. She resurfaces for the six-furlong Primonetta, which drew a field of eight older fillies and mares.

Winning Image brings a 12-for-26 lifetime record into the Primonetta, including a wire-to-wire victory with Black aboard for the first time Jan. 25 in the What a Summer Stakes at Laurel. That was the first stakes win for Black, who began riding in 1970, since August 2008 at Delaware Park.

Black announced his retirement in March 2013 after riding his 5,200th career winner at Parx Racing. He resumed riding on a limited basis later in the year. Black has accepted just six mounts since his win aboard Winning Image in January.

Winning Image’s rivals include Do Somethin, a 10-for-19 mare who steps up to stakes company after winning three straight optional-claiming races this season; I’m Mom’s Favorite, who returns to Maryland for the first time since winning the 2013 Miss Preakness; and Frivolity, a winner of her first two starts this year.

◗ Miss Behaviour, the winner of the Grade 2 Matron last fall in New York, launches her 3-year-old campaign and makes her turf debut in the five-furlong Stormy Blues Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

Based at Laurel with trainer Phil Schoenthal, Miss Behaviour will be making her first start since fading to fifth when she tried a mile in the Grade 3 Delta Princess Stakes in November.

Her seven opponents include Hot Squeeze, narrowly beaten in last fall’s Selima Stakes on turf at Laurel; Tizgale, a winner of back-to-back turf sprints during the winter at Gulfstream Park; and Knit One Purr Too, the runner-up in her turf debut April 11 at Pimlico.

◗ Roadhog, a three-time winner in restricted stakes last season, and Smash and Grab, who has collected six victories over the past two seasons, are logical contenders in a wide-open field of 11 older horses in the Henry Clark at one mile on turf.

The 7-year-old Roadhog won a pair of stakes for Pennsylvania-breds at Parx and the Maryland Million Turf in 2013. He will be making his first start since November.

Seven of Smash and Grab’s eight lifetime victories have come on the main track, but the last time he raced on turf, he missed by a neck in an overnight stakes going 1 1/16 miles at Delaware Park. He switches surfaces after winning two of his first three starts in 2014.
