Winebaughs reeling off wins at first full Gulfstream meet
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – It’s been a meet to far exceed expectations for trainer Cheryl Winebaugh and her husband, Kenny. The Chicago couple are in their first full winter at Gulfstream and have won nine races from 42 starts, with one win apiece from nine different horses.
“We feel very fortunate and blessed,” said Kenny Winebaugh, who works side-by-side with his wife in Barn 21.
Until 2015, the Winebaughs had kept their stable in Chicago for the winter and then raced at Oaklawn Park, where they were a combined 1 for 37 over three seasons. Their main client, Kenneth Fishbein, owns a home in Boca Raton, Fla., and asked them to try Gulfstream, where they currently have 13 horses. All but two of the Winebaughs’ winners here this winter have been owned wholly or in part by Fishbein.
“He’s been a great owner,” said Kenny Winebaugh. “We’ll be moving out of Florida soon to go back home to Chicago, and we’ll try to keep things going up there.”
◗ There is no real feature on a 10-race Friday card at Gulfstream, although the Rainbow 6 will attract major interest from horseplayers. First post is 12:35 p.m. Eastern, with the Rainbow 6 spanning races 5-10.
◗ The fifth annual fundraising dinner to benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund is set for Monday evening at Frank and Dino’s restaurant in Boca Raton. Tickets are $200 per person or $2,000 for a sponsorship table. More information is available at (561) 218-4636.
◗ There will be no racing here next Wednesday because of the Fasig-Tipton sale of 2-year-olds in training being held in the walking ring.
