SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Wine Steward and Caldwell Luvs Gold have a lot in common. Both are undefeated, 2-year-old New York-breds who probably want to go farther than the six furlongs they successfully negotiated despite wide trips to win the $200,000 Funny Cide and its filly counterpart, the $200,000 Seeking the Ante stakes, on Saratoga Showcase day here Sunday. The Wine Steward won for the third time in as many starts, and his second stakes, after rallying to a head decision over the pacesetting El Grande O in the Funny Cide.  He did so despite stumbling at the start and lugging in sharply at midstretch. The Wine Steward, who defeated open company when capturing the Bashford Manor Stakes at Ellis Park in his previous start, also had to overcome considerable ground loss en route to victory after fanning about seven paths wide with his bid into the stretch before ultimately running down the pacesetting El Grande O under vigorous handling from jockey Manny Franco. :: Get Saratoga Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. El Grande O dug in gamely when engaged by The Wine Steward 1/16-mile from the wire before succumbing grudgingly at the end while easily best of the rest, finishing 5 1/2 lengths in front of third-place finisher Whatchatalkinabout. The Wine Steward, a son of Vino Rosso, is trained by Mike Maker for the partnership of Paradise Farms Corp. and David Staudacher. He completed the distance in 1:10.92 seconds over a fast track and paid $4.20. “I thought Manny (Franco) rode him great,” Maker said. “The thing is, he wants no part of sprinting. The best we’ll see is when we got a mile or a mile and one sixteenth.” Maker said The Wine Steward could wind up back with open company in his next start, either in the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland or the  Champagne this fall at Aqueduct. Caldwell Luvs Gold also dropped to the rear of the field in the run down the backstretch and came very wide into the stretch with his bid before ultimately overtaking 2-1 favorite Stellamaris in the Seeking the Ante for her second win in as many starts. Caldwell Luvs Gold, a daughter of Goldencents, had used similar tactics to win her debut by 2 3/4 lengths, also at six furlongs, here earlier in the meet. Stellamaris, the only maiden in the field of six fillies in the Seeking the Ante, stalked the early leaders from the outset, took command four wide approaching the quarter pole and fought on gamely when hooked by the winner near midstretch before coming out narrowly second-best for the second time in as many tries to launch her career. Like El Grande O in the Funny Cide, she, too, was much the best of the others, finishing 7 3/4 lengths clear of My Shea D Lady, who was a distant third. Caldwell Luvs Gold is trained by Brad Cox for Dickie Racing. She completed six panels in 1:11.29 and paid $7.60. “Big effort, we had to dig in there late, obviously the top two are going to be very good in the division moving forward,” Cox said. “It’s always tough to win with that kind of trip, but this is her. The longer maybe the better. I’m thinking she’ll put herself in the race a little more going farther. This is how she is in the morning. She breaks fine and they kind of get away from her a little bit but she comes running, puts in a long, sustained run and I love what we’ve seen from her in her first two starts.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
