Wind Racer has some big shoes to fill in sprint feature

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – One door opened just as another one closed.
For Stonestreet Stables and trainer Marty Wolfson, the emergence of Wind Racer came the same week that Atreides was retired. Six days after Wind Racer made a flashy Jan. 7 debut at Gulfstream Park, it was announced that a tendon injury had put Atreides out to stud for the 2015 season.
Both 4-year-olds are cut from the same brilliant cloth. Atreides opened his career last summer with Beyer Speed Figures of 105, 102, and 105, while Wind Racer began with a 96 when dusting maidens in a six-furlong race last month. Stonestreet actually co-owns Wind Racer with her breeder, Martin Cherry.
Now comes an opportunity for Wind Racer, a daughter of Curlin, to continue in those hoofsteps, as the filly will be heavily favored against eight others in the Thursday feature at Gulfstream, a $48,000, first-level allowance at six furlongs. Eleven races are on tap, with the first going at 12:30 p.m. Eastern and the featured 10th race at 5:06.
After weeks of dry weather in the south Florida region, forecasters are calling for a good possibility of showers Thursday.
