A filly by Bolt d'Oro brought the hammer down at $1.25 million on Tuesday to lead the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May 2-year-olds in training sale at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium. The auction concluded with a record average and record-tying median. Fasig-Tipton reported that 345 juveniles sold during the two-day sale - including 15 private sales on the grounds as of 6:30 p.m. Tuesday - for gross receipts of $32,921,500. At last year's sale, 375 juveniles sold for $34,795,500, with 22 private sales in that total. The 2023 gross was the second-highest in sale history. With the Bolt d'Oro filly leading seven juveniles sold for $500,000 or more, this week's average price was $95,425, up 3 percent from $92,788 last year, and edging the prior record of $95,391 established in 2022. The median was a record-tying $50,000, matching the figure set in 2021 and equaled last year. The median is considered a key figure for market health because it shows activity in the middle and lower markets, and is not as strongly influenced by outlying prices at the top end, as average can be. :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  The sale's buyback rate was 16 percent, compared to last year's 14 percent, which was the second-lowest in sale history. Numbers under 20 percent are considered outstanding in what has developed into a highly selective marketplace, particularly with juveniles. "The 2-year-old sales, you really go through a sorting-out process," Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning Jr. said. "Horses have to work a reasonable time, they have to vet. There's a lot of filters they go through that make it harder to achieve a higher clearance rate at the 2-year-old sales than other types of sales that we do." Trainer Steve Asmussen signed the ticket on the sale-topping filly on behalf of Winchell Thoroughbreds. The filly is from the third crop of Grade 1 winner Bolt d'Oro, who led the 2022 freshman sire list by earnings and finished third on last year's second-crop earnings list. Bolt d’Oro, a son of Medaglia d'Oro, is the sire of 11 stakes winners from his first two crops, led by Grade 1-winning juvenile Tamara, and graded/group stakes winners Bold Discovery, Boppy O, Instant Coffee, Major Dude, and Ruby Nell. The Bolt d'Oro filly breezed a furlong in 10 seconds flat last Friday during her session of the under-tack preview show on the Timonium dirt track. In the last 13 editions of this sale, only four horses have shaded 10 seconds. The filly is out of the winning Arch mare Werewolf, who is the dam of three winners from as many starters. Those include stakes winners Howling Time and Air Recruit. Graded stakes winner Desert Party appears on the catalog page. "Congratulations to all the connections. What a filly," Spendthrift Farm, which stands Bolt d'Oro, posted on its social media accounts. The filly, who was bred in Kentucky by Springhouse Farm, was a successful pinhook after selling to Havertz Bloodstock for $335,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! She was consigned to the Midlantic sale by Wavertree Stables, and found her perfect marketplace after being cataloged but scratched from the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s spring sale of 2-year-olds in training last month. "The calendar helps us," Browning said of the Midlantic sale. "You're in the middle of May now, and the horses aren’t necessarily having to be pushed."
