William Morey, assistant suspended in relation to March incident at Santa Anita
CYPRESS, Calif. – Trainer William Morey was suspended 45 days and his assistant, Miguel Delgado, was given a 30-day ban on Saturday for violations of California Horse Racing Board rules related to the improper administration of a feed supplement in the hours before two horses were scheduled to start at Santa Anita on March 29.
The rulings were published on Saturday at Los Alamitos by Grant Baker, Luis Jauregui, and Kim Sawyer, the stewards at the Santa Anita meeting.
The penalties were announced even though Morey has apparently left racing.
Morey has not had any starters since March 29 and dispersed his Santa Anita-based stable to other trainers and shipped some horses off the property in late March and early April. Morey did not immediately return a text message late Saturday afternoon regarding the possibility of an appeal.
Morey, 45, was suspended from Sunday to Aug 13 for three violations – trainer to insure condition of a horse, administration of substances not permitted after entry, and for causing late scratches. Delgado, 52, was cited for administration of substances not permitted after entry and for causing late scratches.
Morey had hearings with the Santa Anita stewards earlier this spring.
Morey won 10 races with 56 starters at Santa Anita from Dec. 26 to March 29. The most prominent winner of that sequence was Rye in the $200,000 Unusual Heat Turf Classic in January.
