William and Mary cruises in Tri-State Futurity win

William and Mary ran to his 1-10 odds in the $70,600 Tri-State Futurity at Charles Town on Wednesday evening, winning by three lengths under jockey Antonio Lopez, who tapped him twice with the whip in the stretch to keep his mind on business. The win improved the 3-year-old son of Windsor Castle's record to four wins from five starts.
Bred, owned, and trained by James W. Casey, the dean of Taylor Mountain Farm, William and Mary was heavily bet in the place and show pools, returning $2.20 and $2.20. In the show pool, $168,997 of the $197,776 total was wagered on William and Mary. He also had $30,351 of the $37,203 place pool riding with him.
William and Mary stumbled at the start of the seven-furlong race but quickly righted himself and took a short lead over True Heir. The pair set reasonable fractions of 24.74 seconds and 49.86 before William and Mary began to open up at the quarter pole.
Mr. Jacoby, who raced in third position early, finished willingly for second but was never a serious threat. Bin Goode finished 3 1/2 lengths farther back, edging True Heir for third by a half-length in the six-horse field of West Virginia-breds.
William and Mary was timed in 1:27.59.
In his only loss, William and Mary finished second at 1-5 in the West Virginia Futurity, beaten a half-length by his stablemate, the filly Bound to Windsor, who is 4 for 5 in her career. Like William and Mary, she is by Windsor Castle.
