Willet gets one more chance to go out a winner

The 8-year-old New York-bred mare Willet will get another chance to leave the track a winner in Saturday’s $125,000 Correction Stakes at Aqueduct.
It was believed that last month’s Broadway Stakes, in which she was beaten a neck, was to be the final start of Willet’s career before she headed to the breeding shed and a date with Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. But trainer and part-owner Jimmy Iselin said there’s time for one more race, and after Willet breezed five furlongs in 1:01.21 on Sunday at Aqueduct, Iselin decided to run her in the Correction.
“If she’s good, that’ll be it,” Iselin said. “If something doesn’t suit us between now and Saturday, that’ll be it, too. She’s been well cared for and loved. I’d like her to go out a winner. Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die.”
Willet, a daughter of Jump Start, has been a model of consistency, posting a record of 10-9-6 from 30 starts with earnings of $853,400. While she was never able to win a graded race, she did win five stakes, including the Interborough against open company in 2015.
The Correction is expected to be topped by Paulassilverlining, a multiple stakes winner who is coming off a sharp allowance win over the inner track Feb. 11. Others expected include Clothes Fall Off, Momameamaria, and My Savannah Belle.
