Will Rogers cancels Tuesday, Wednesday cards
Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla., has canceled racing for Tuesday and Wednesday due to significant rainfall in the area over the last 24 hours, said Travis Noland, director of communications with Cherokee Nation.
Noland said Tuesday that the cancellation was made for the safety of jockeys and horses.
Parts of Oklahoma and Texas have been experiencing severe weather since Saturday.
Will Rogers had an 11-race card on tap Tuesday, led by the $55,000 Cherokee Nation Classic Cup, a 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds and up bred in Oklahoma. There were 10 races scheduled for Wednesday.
It is not yet known whether the lost races, or the stakes, will be rescheduled, Noland said Tuesday morning.
The cancellations comes on the heels of another track in the region, Lone Star Park near Dallas, being forced to cancel its card last Saturday due to extreme weather conditions.
