Wildwood’s Beauty is champing at the bit ahead of the $150,000 American Beauty on Saturday at Oaklawn Park – and she’s also chomping on her trainer, Scott Becker. “I’ve got a fresh grab mark on my arm from three days ago,” Becker said earlier this week. “She’s very mean.” Mean and fast. Wildwood’s Beauty is a four-time stakes winner looking for her second sprint win at the meet. She’s part of a field of nine fillies and mares in the American Beauty, which will be run over six furlongs. The well-matched cast includes the Steve Asmussen-trained stakes winners Joy’s Rocket and Abrogate, the Grade 2-placed runners Li’l Tootsie and Ain’t No Elmers, and the well-bred invader Miss Mosaic. :: Serious horseplayers use serious products. She set the pace over a muddy track and prevailed by a length and a quarter in what was her first out since April. Becker trains the earner of more than $600,000 for William Stiritz. “I gave her time off all summer and we put her in the fall sale in November,” Becker said of the auction at Fasig-Tipton. “I told [Stiritz] how well she did with time off, and he pulled her out of the sale and we started training her for her comeback race at Oaklawn. “We thought we’d try a couple of stakes again this year.” Wildwood’s Beauty was third in last year’s American Beauty, finishing behind winner Frank’s Rockette and runner-up Amy’s Challenge. She wrapped up her 2021 season with a fourth to Edgeway in the $250,000 Carousel in April at Oaklawn. Edgeway would go on to run second in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Wildwood’s Beauty breezed a half-mile in 49.20 seconds Jan. 14 at Oaklawn. “We’re going forward,” Becker said. “Everything’s hitting on all cylinders. We’ll see what happens.” Joy’s Rocket is looking for the fourth stakes win of her career Saturday, while Abrogate seeks her second local stakes win behind last year’s Purple Martin at this distance. Li’l Tootsie has won allowances in her last two starts, one at Churchill Downs and the other at Oaklawn. Miss Mosaic is a half-sister to Miss Temple City, a multiple Grade 1 winner who earned $1.6 million. Wildwood’s Beauty will break outside of most of those rivals when she starts from post 8 under Francisco Arrieta. “She’s kind of capable of anything,” Becker said. “It’s not her forte to be in front. I would say with the outside position she’d be in a stalking position.” Becker has a 17-horse division at Oaklawn and is off to a fast start at the meet. He’s won four races from 13 starts for a 31-percent strike rate. As for Wildwood’s Beauty, her strike rate this winter is about 100 percent. “I had gone about two years without getting [bit],” Becker said. “The other day, I gave her a peppermint and turned my back to her . . . ”
