Wildcat Heir juveniles shine at OBS breeze show

Joe Nevills|Apr 17, 2017

The final crop of the late Florida sire Wildcat Heir showed itself well during the first session of the under-tack show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. spring sale of 2-year-olds in training on Monday, with his juveniles clocking the fastest times at both an eighth of a mile and a quarter-mile.

The horses breezed over the Ocala Training Center’s all-weather Safetrack surface.

Leading the workers at one furlong was a filly named Stars Wild Child, who crossed the line in 9 4/5 seconds.

The chestnut filly is out of the stakes-placed Grand Slam mare Battingstar, whose first foal has placed in two of five starts. Bred in Florida by the partnership of Thomas Groves and Craig Wheeler, the filly is from the family of Grade 3 winner Move. The filly is consigned by Wheeler as agent.

Monday’s fastest juvenile at two furlongs was a colt who completed his breeze in 20 2/5 seconds. The effort was just one-fifth of a second off the OBS breeze-show record, which was tied at this year’s March sale by a Super Saver colt who later sold for $625,000.

The bay Wildcat Heir colt is the first foal out of the placed Put It Back mare Business Decision and comes from the family of Grade 3 winners In Conference and Ever So Clever. He was bred in Florida by Angela Ingenito.

Salvador Hernandez purchased the colt for $35,000 at last year’s OBS August yearling sale, and he is consigned at the spring sale by Blue River Bloodstock as agent.

Wildcat Heir died in January 2015 following a severe case of colic, cutting short a career in which he had established himself as Florida’s perennial leading sire. He last stood at Journeyman Stud in Ocala and was Florida’s leading sire of 2016 by winners, progeny earnings, and turf earnings. It was his fifth time leading the state in earnings since 2010.

The breeze show continues daily through Saturday, beginning each day at 8 a.m. Eastern. The auction will take place April 25-28, with a 10:30 a.m. start time.
