Wildatlanticstorm steps up with Clever Trever triumph

Wildatlanticstorm established himself as the local favorite for the Springboard Mile with his Friday night win over Campfire Creed in the $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes at Remington Park.
The seven-furlong race for 2-year-olds was the final steppingstone to the Springboard, a $400,000 race that carries eligibility points for the Kentucky Derby. It will be run Dec. 17 at Remington. Campfire Creed won the first local prep, the Kip Deville, over six furlongs in September.
Wildatlanticstorm ($13.40) was always prominent in the Clever Trevor, racing alongside Alto Road and Sam Sez through fractions of 22.44 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.47 for the half-mile. Wildatlanticstorm went on in the stretch, then held off a fast-closing Campfire Creed by a nose. It was another 7 1/4 lengths back in third to Toddchero.

Wildatlanticstorm covered the distance on a sloppy, sealed track in 1:23.62.
“He broke so nice, I let him stay where he was comfortable,” winning rider David Cabrera said in a post-race interview broadcast by Remington. “The whole way, he was comfortable.”
Ray Ashford Jr. trains Wildatlanticstorm, a son of Stormy Atlantic who races for his breeder, Jim Jorgensen.
Wildatlanticstorm has now won 3 of 5 starts for earnings of $132,562. He’s part of a notable crop of Iowa-bred juveniles this year, with the group led by the Breeders’ Cup-bound Tyler’s Tribe.
